Description
The Network Administrator is an entry-level technical position responsible for assisting in the monitoring, maintenance, and basic administration of Hampton University's network infrastructure. This role supports daily operations of the University's wired and wireless networks, legacy and IP-based phone systems, and related communication services under close supervision.
Examples of Duties
  • Assist with the monitoring and support of the University's network infrastructure, including wired, wireless, and telecommunications systems; identify performance issues and escalate complex problems as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity, IP telephony, and RingCentral voice, video, messaging, and collaboration service issues, coordinating with vendors and campus stakeholders as needed.
  • Serve as the primary administrator for the University's RingCentral platform, ensuring the reliable operation, availability, and performance of voice, video, messaging, and collaboration services for faculty and staff.
  • Provision, configure, and manage RingCentral user accounts, call routing, IVRs, voicemail, messaging, and related system settings in accordance with university standards and operational requirements.
  • Perform routine transport, administration and maintenance of network and telecommunications equipment, including switches, wireless access points, firewalls, and related infrastructure; implement approved configuration changes under established change management procedures.
  • Support the installation, configuration, patching, maintenance, and lifecycle management of network and telecommunications hardware, software, and related services.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation for the network and RingCentral environments, including network diagrams, inventories, configuration records, operational procedures, technology standards, and user provisioning and configuration processes.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining end-user guides, knowledge base articles, training materials, and DoIT/NCS website content to promote user adoption, improve self-service support, and ensure the effective utilization of network and telecommunications services.
  • Respond to service requests and incidents in a timely manner, providing effective customer support and regular communication regarding issue status and resolution.
  • Assist with network upgrades, infrastructure projects, system migrations, and new technology deployments, working closely with senior staff and project stakeholders.
  • Follow and support University cybersecurity, backup, disaster recovery, change management, and business continuity practices for network and telecommunications systems.
  • Ensure compliance with University IT policies, security standards, regulatory requirements, and technology governance practices.
  • Collaborate with other DoIT team members to implement service enhancements, improve user adoption, and support the continuous improvement of campus communication and collaboration technologies.
  • Other duties assigned by the NCS Director

Typical Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Networking, Telecommunications, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, including routing, switching, and network connectivity concepts.
  • Experience with or familiarity with network infrastructure components, including switches, routers, and wireless access points.
  • Knowledge of Voice over IP (VoIP), telecommunications systems, or related communication technologies.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and follow established procedures and technical guidance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, Telecommunications, or a related field.
  • CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or similar industry certification.
  • Experience administering or supporting Microsoft Windows Server environments and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technologies.
  • Experience supporting VoIP, unified communications, or cloud-based telephony platforms such as RingCentral.
  • Experience working in a higher education, public sector, or enterprise IT environment.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, user guides, and knowledge base articles.

Supplemental Information
  • Standard office environment with periodic visits to wiring closets, datacenters, and campus buildings.
  • May require lifting of equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work to support scheduled maintenance, emergencies or University events.
