What is a universal heavy equipment operator?

A Universal Heavy Equipment Operator is a professional trained to operate a wide range of heavy machinery used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. These operators are skilled in handling equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, and cranes. Their responsibilities include safely maneuvering machinery to move earth, materials, or heavy objects according to project specifications. They must be knowledgeable about safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and site regulations. Universal operators often have broader training, allowing them to work with various types of heavy equipment rather than specializing in just one.

To thrive as a Universal Heavy Equipment Operator, you need expertise in operating various heavy machinery, a high school diploma or equivalent, and often a valid commercial driver's license (CDL). Familiarity with equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and safety systems, plus certifications like OSHA or NCCER, are typically required. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and precise operation of equipment, minimizing risks and maximizing productivity on construction and industrial sites.

What are some common challenges faced by universal heavy equipment operators on construction sites?

Universal Heavy Equipment Operators often encounter challenges such as adapting to various types of heavy machinery, working in diverse and sometimes difficult terrain, and maintaining safety standards in high-risk environments. Effective communication and flexibility are essential to overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth, safe operations.

Job description

Heavy Equipment Operator (Front-End Loader) - Mulberry, FL
Starting Pay: $21/hour | Swing Shift (2-Step Rotation)
Road & Rail Services is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator in Mulberry, FL. This is a hands-on role operating a front-end loader to move and load fertilizer in an active industrial environment. If you've operated loaders in tight spaces and know how to work efficiently and safely, this is a strong opportunity for steady, long-term work.
What You'll Be Doing:
This Heavy Equipment Operator position is focused on running a front-end loader to load fertilizer into trucks and move product throughout the site. You'll be working both inside a warehouse and across the property, requiring precision, awareness, and confidence handling equipment in tighter operating areas.
• Operate a front-end loader to load fertilizer into trucks
• Move and stage product across the facility
• Maneuver equipment in and out of warehouse spaces safely and efficiently
• Perform routine equipment checks and follow all safety protocols
• Work closely with the team to keep operations running smoothly
What We're Looking For:
We are looking for a Heavy Equipment Operator who has real, hands-on experience-not someone who just "has seen it before."
• At least 2 years of front-end loader experience (required)
• Ability to operate confidently in tight or enclosed spaces
• Comfortable working in an outdoor/industrial environment
• Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
• Reliable and looking for long-term, stable employment
Schedule & Work Environment:
This Heavy Equipment Operator role operates on a 2-step swing shift, so flexibility is important. You'll be working in an active fertilizer operation with exposure to dust, weather, and heavy equipment activity.
Why Road & Rail Services?
Since 1987, Road & Rail Services has built a reputation for stability, safety, and growth. We promote from within and offer long-term career paths-not just jobs.
• Medical, dental, and 401(k)
• Paid time off and holidays
• PPE provided + annual boot allowance
• Opportunities to grow into leadership roles
Ready to Apply?
If you're an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator who knows how to run a loader the right way and wants consistent, reliable work-apply today.
