Step into Your New Role

Kleinfelder is seeking to fill a position as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in our Salt Lake City, UT office

The ideal candidate will:

  • Serve as geotechnical technical lead on medium to large size projects of varying complexity
  • Mentor / direct junior staff to perform field activities including geotechnical drilling, laboratory testing, and construction observations with subcontractors. 
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of technical or project management experience on transportation projects; experience on alternative delivery projects in Utah is a plus.
  • Perform and oversee geotechnical engineering analyses and oversee and prepare geotechnical reports for the design and construction for a variety of private commercial and public projects along with power projects.
  • Review work of and mentor junior staff.
  • Build relationships with clients and subcontractors.
  • Develop and grow business with current clients by performing/driving technically excellent geotechnical recommendations.

We are looking for someone with the ability to provide quality technical leadership and project management on transportation projects, but also various commercial, municipal, power, and water projects.

Strong analytical skills are required in areas including:

  • Geotechnical engineering evaluations including:
    • Engineering for soft soil conditions,
    • Shallow and deep foundation design,
    • Ground improvement techniques,
    • Earthquake engineering,
    • Rock mechanics
  • Experience with drilling oversight andsoil and rock classification,
  • Experience with construction oversight
  • Subgrade observations, observation of backfill and compaction, deep foundation installation, etc.

Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in civil (geotechnical) or geological engineering
  • Minimum of 12 years of consulting experience in the geotechnical field.
  • PE or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience with proposal writing, scope, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Familiarity or exposure to project management
  • Experience with executing geotechnical field investigations
  • Experience with geologic conditions and hazards in Utah and surrounding States as well as national geology and geologic hazards
  • Proficiency in software including Slope/W or SLIDE, SHAFT, LPILE, APILE, Settle3
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering analyses without the use of geotechnical software.
  • Experience with and strong abilities with technical writing of geotechnical investigation reports
  • Working well in a team environment
  • Valid driver's license.

Knowledge of the following software, as a minimum:

  • Microsoft Office
  • gINT/BoreDM
  • Slide/SlopeW
  • L-Pile, Group
  • GRL WEAP
  • Settle 3D
