About us:
The Centre for Research and Applications in Fluidic Technologies (CRAFT) is a collaborative research center between the University of Toronto (UofT), the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), and Unity Health Toronto (UHT). CRAFT is establishing an internationally leading and nationally unique research enterprise, focused on device innovation related to (a) diagnostics for remote communities and critical care, (b) organ-on-a-chip technologies, and (c) biofabrication. A particular emphasis is on growing the engagement with industry and clinical partners as well as integrating new research equipment at our new site, the Diagnostic Horizon's Lab at UT.
Your opportunity:
The CRAFT Technician will work in a professional and multidisciplinary environment, alongside UofT and NRC staff members and as part of a technical team that operates the CRAFT facilities including the Tissue Foundry (BSL 2 spaces), the Device Foundry (class 1,000 and 10,000 cleanrooms for microfluidic device manufacturing), and the new Diagnostic Horizons Laboratory (wearable and implantable microfluidic sensors). The CRAFT facilities support 80+ researchers and a handful of startup companies that use the infrastructure to manufacture and test microfluidic devices for a variety of applications including biomanufacting, chemical synthesis, energy, and much more. The CRAFT Technician will work directly with the CRAFT Operations Supervisor to plan and execute the new DHL facility, specifically implementing the new equipment that will arrive including PCB manufacturing, mechanical testing, 3D printing, device packaging, sterilization, 3D textile printing, and more. The CRAFT Technician will also partake in other day to day operational requirements of the facility as well as some fee-for-service work where needed. Prior knowledge of wearable and implantable sensors, or microfluidic device manufacturing is an asset however it's expected that the CRAFT Technician will learn a variety of new scientific instrumentation and build on any prior experience.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on experiment set ups and lab techniques
  • Applying established standards when providing lab access to users during assigned times
  • Documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures
  • Providing orientation to others on lab equipment, working procedures and practices
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs
  • Troubleshooting issues uncovered by testing or user feedback, Maintaining equipment and supply inventory
  • Testing and analyzing new and upgraded software and/or hardware, Determining technical requirements for fabrication projects
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in engineering and or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four years of experience of related laboratory experience in the industry and/or academia. Experience in supporting laboratory operations and handling standard lab equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of direct experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience with microfluidic device manufacturing equipment and techniques that can include 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling, PCB manufacturing, hot embossing.
  • Experience with preparing, following, and revising Standard Operating Procedures pertaining to scientific instruments and laboratory processes.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work instructions and schematics pertaining to laboratory research equipment.
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing, early lab-setup environment, where established SOPs and procedures are not yet present.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with manual and powered/energized resources.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines, multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office suites (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), with the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide range of audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, good judgement, initiative, tact, discretion and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills with the demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with students (undergrad, graduate), and able to teach technical concepts to this cohort.
  • Proven ability to problem solve with high attention to detail and accuracy in their work.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, independently, and under direction.
