Job description

1. Education: Enrolled in an accredited college of nursing in an RN program and, at a minimum, in the first semester of the nursing coursework. Must have current BLS certification. The RN student must present a nursing skills checklist completed by their nursing instructor to indicate the skills the student can perform.

A Student Nurse Intern must commit to one year of service with Unity Health after graduation. A Student Nurse Extern will have no defined commitment.

2. Training and Experience: Must have recommendation of nursing faculty. Previous experience as a nursing assistant desirable, but not required.

3. Job Knowledge: Ability to perform duties for direct and indirect patient care. Direct care duties include but are not limited to assisting the patient with personal hygiene needs and observing the patient’s condition, including their vital signs, their feeding and elimination patterns, and assisting the nurse with patient care as delegated. Indirect duties may include general housekeeping skills, ordering and maintenance of supplies, and computer entry abilities.

4. Safety Sensitive: YES

In the interest of protecting the health and safety of all patients, associates, and guests, Unity Health has classified some positions as “safety sensitive.” A “safety sensitive” position is any job position in which impaired performance could result in harm to the health and/or safety of self or others. Any associate that is actively engaged in the use of medical marijuana, even if in possession of a valid medical marijuana card, will be excluded from employment in a “safety sensitive” position.

DESCRIPTION:

Performs direct and indirect care duties under the guidance and direction of the RN. Responsible for implementing components of the plan of care through the initiation/completion of procedures relating to basic human, mental, spiritual, and social needs; comfort and safety measures; activities of daily living; personal care needs; nutrition and fluid needs; elimination needs; and task delegated by the primary licensed nurse. Performs skilled procedures under the supervision of the licensed nurse. Indirect patient care includes but is not limited to cleaning occupied and unoccupied patient areas and maintaining an environment that is neat and free of hazards to the patient’s well being; assisting with clerical tasks as assigned. An understanding of and willingness to follow infection control and safety guidelines is mandatory. Supports the organization’s mission, vision, and values and adheres to Unity Health’s policies and procedures. (*As the nursing student progresses, the duties assigned will be equivalent to their nursing coursework. Exception will be medication administration which is not allowed during the nursing coursework period.)

A Nurse Intern agrees to a commitment to work with our team for a minimum duration of one year after obtaining Arkansas State Board Certification. Upon certification, Registered Nurses are still eligible for all RN bonuses and can serve commitments simultaneously. A Student Nurse Extern will have no defined commitment.
