Description
Principal Functions:
The Financial Navigator works with patients and their families to help them reduce stress or hardship related to the cost of treatment for a medical condition including cancer. Financial navigators help patients understand their out-of-pocket expenses and what their health insurance benefits are. Financial Navigators assist patients in setting up payment plans, gain access to care, find cost-saving methods for treatments and understanding their insurance benefits. Financial Navigators may provide community resources to assist the patient's needs.
Position Duties:
1. Assists patients and their families by reviewing benefits and out of pocket expenses.
2. Connect patients with community resources, social services, and support groups as needed.
3. Coordinates Cancer Center patients and assists with indigent drug programs, copay assistance programs, and drug replacement programs.
4. Assist patients with insurance optimization which includes Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance programs.
5. Assists patients in completing the documentation for the financial assistance program.
6. Reviews financial assistance program applications and determines benefit amount to patient if any.
7. Responsible for helping patients understand their Explanation of Benefits (EOB) including insurance policies and covered services.
8. Assists with resolving patient billing and insurance concerns.
9. Review of patient accounts providing outreach to patients with balances.
10. Collect and correctly enter demographic and identification information into the Electronic Health Record.
11. Obtains billing and insurance information into the Electronic Health Record.
12. Completes reminder calls of upcoming appointments and any payments due on the date of service.
13. Timely reporting on fiscal year and year-to-date progress of department.
14. Communicate information and details to members of the medical care team.
15. Assists patients and visitors with questions and concerns.
16. Answer the phone promptly, receive and relay messages effectively.
17. General cleaning and restocking of supplies. Assists in maintaining cost effectiveness by preventing waste of supplies.
18. Adheres to Unity Physicians Hospital policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities. Reports observed or suspected violations, hazards, and noncompliance to a supervisor.
19. Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality. Assures protection and privacy of health information as attained through written, electronic or oral disclosures.
20. Displays concern and initiative. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
21. Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
22. Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
23. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
โ€ข Customer Service preferably in a medical setting.
โ€ข Basic Medical Terminology
โ€ข Knowledge of various insurance types and ability to verify insurance benefits.
โ€ข EMR proficiency,
โ€ข Working knowledge of ICD-10CM,
โ€ข Microsoft Office Suite
Skills:
โ€ข Strong administrative and organizational skills
โ€ข Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
โ€ข Ability to multitask and maintain strong attention to detail with frequent interruptions. Work is frequently performed under pressure.
โ€ข Requires proficiency in math skills to perform calculation of patient accounts and bank deposits.
โ€ข Research skills are essential in locating guarantor information and correcting patient accounts.
โ€ข Requires English language skills adequate for written and interpersonal communication.
โ€ข Requires visual and auditory acuity adequate for frequent use of computers and occasional use of other business office equipment.
โ€ข Ability to sit for long periods and to perform desk and office activities.
Working Conditions
The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases, and other hazardous wastes, (i.e. Hepatitis, Aids, and Tuberculosis). Proper precautions will be taught and provided by the hospital. The position requires a considerable amount of walking, stooping, pulling, lifting, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Occasional overhead and low reaching, and to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 10 lbs. frequently. May be asked to assist with greater weights.
