Position Summary

The Charge Nurse shall provide comprehensive nursing care to the Unity Health Care Department of Corrections Health Center as established by Unity Health Care (UHC) standards and applicable nursing guidelines. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Charge Nurse is responsible for providing clinical leadership, supporting nursing operations, and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care within the Department of Corrections Health Center.

The Charge Nurse serves as a key nursing resource, supporting nursing staff, promoting continuity of care, and assisting with clinical and administrative operations across assigned shifts, including day, evening, night, and weekend coverage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides professional nursing services at the Central Detention Facility (CDF), Central Treatment Facility (CTF), or other locations as directed by Unity Health Care.
  • Serves as the Charge Nurse and supports the management, coordination, and development of nursing personnel within CDF or CTF.
  • Promotes continuity of nursing services and supports compliance with Unity Health Care policies, Department of Corrections requirements, and applicable nursing standards.
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing and Nurse Manager, functions as the senior nursing administrative representative on-site, including during off shifts.
  • Supports nursing standards and practices as defined by the District of Columbia Board of Nursing.
  • Assists with providing input regarding nursing staff performance evaluations.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and provides guidance to the Nurse Manager regarding clinical and administrative matters across assigned shifts.
  • Supports the integration of quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practices into clinical and management operations.
  • Serves as the primary administrator of the Methadone Clinic/Opiate Treatment Program (OTP) for the CDF Charge Nurse role.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (Associate Degree in Nursing, Diploma, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility for licensure in Washington, DC.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in acute care settings (such as Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Medical/Surgical) and/or ambulatory care.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience as a Charge Nurse.
