A Union Traffic Control job involves directing traffic around construction sites, roadwork, or accidents to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians. Workers in this role follow safety regulations, use signs and flags to communicate with drivers, and may work in various weather conditions. Being part of a union often means receiving benefits such as better wages, job security, and access to training programs.
A typical day in Union Traffic Control involves setting up and maintaining traffic control zones around construction or roadwork sites, directing the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines. You’ll regularly communicate with crew members, flaggers, and law enforcement to coordinate activities and quickly adapt to changing site needs or weather conditions. Responsibilities may also include inspecting equipment, updating signage, and documenting incidents or hazards. Teamwork is essential, as these roles often require close coordination with both union members and supervisors to keep operations running smoothly. Working as part of a union offers additional support, resources, and consistent workplace standards.
To thrive as a Union Traffic Control professional, you need a solid understanding of traffic management, workplace safety protocols, and relevant labor union practices, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with traffic control devices, flagging certification, and knowledge of local/state traffic laws are typically required. Strong communication, situational awareness, and teamwork skills make individuals stand out in this position. These abilities are crucial for maintaining safe and efficient job sites while coordinating with construction crews and the public.
