What is a union rep?

A Union Rep, or union representative, is an employee elected or appointed by their coworkers to represent them in dealings with management and to ensure that the terms of the union contract are upheld. They act as a liaison between the union members and the employer, addressing workplace issues, grievances, and concerns. Union Reps also play a key role in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, resolving disputes, and educating workers about their rights. Their goal is to protect and advocate for the interests of the workforce.

What are some common challenges union reps face when balancing the interests of employees and management?

Union Representatives often navigate the delicate balance between advocating for employees' rights and maintaining a collaborative relationship with management. Common challenges include addressing grievances fairly, negotiating contracts under tight deadlines, and managing differing expectations among members. Successful Union Reps communicate transparently with both parties, prioritize issues based on collective needs, and stay informed about labor laws to ensure fair outcomes. This role requires strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to build trust on both sides.

How do you get a job as a union rep?

To become a union representative, you typically need to be a current employee in the union's industry or workplace and demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills. Many union reps are elected by union members or appointed based on experience and involvement in union activities, and some positions may require knowledge of labor laws and union policies.

What is the difference between Union Rep vs Employee Advocate?

AspectUnion RepEmployee Advocate
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials, but knowledge of labor laws and union policiesOften requires HR or legal certifications, or experience in employee rights
Work EnvironmentWorks within union organizations, representing members in negotiations and disputesWorks within HR departments or as external consultants, focusing on individual employee issues
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in unionized workplaces across various industriesFound in both unionized and non-unionized companies, focusing on employee well-being

While both roles support employees, a Union Rep primarily advocates for union members in negotiations and disputes, whereas an Employee Advocate focuses on individual employee rights and concerns, often within HR or legal frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union rep?

To thrive as a Union Rep, you need a solid understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining processes, and conflict resolution, often supported by experience in labor relations or relevant training. Familiarity with grievance tracking systems, contract management software, and knowledge of union bylaws is beneficial. Strong communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills help build trust and effectively represent members' interests. These skills are crucial for protecting workers' rights, resolving workplace issues, and fostering productive relationships between employees and management.

How do you become a union rep?

To become a union representative, you typically need to be a member of the union and demonstrate leadership or communication skills. Many unions require candidates to be active members for a certain period and may hold elections or nominations for the position. Training or certification in labor relations or negotiation can also be beneficial.

Overview

As the HR Representative supporting our Boise operations, you will serve as the on-site HR resource for union employees, field leaders, and management. You will coordinate a compliant, organized onboarding experience; support day-to-day labor and employee relations; and partner with the corporate HR team to apply company policies and collective bargaining agreement requirements consistently. This role is well suited for an HR professional who is comfortable working in a fast-paced construction or skilled-trades environment and building credibility in the field.

A Typical Day at Prime Controls

Coordinate end-to-end onboarding for union employees, including pre-employment requirements, orientation, employment documentation, system entry, badging, and jobsite readiness.

  • Partner with union representatives, business agents, stewards, field leadership, payroll, recruiting, and corporate HR to resolve onboarding, referral, dispatch, classification, and employment-status questions.

  • Maintain accurate union employee records, seniority and classification information, onboarding files, and other documentation required by company practice or applicable collective bargaining agreements.

  • Serve as an accessible first point of contact for employee questions regarding policies, pay and benefits processes, workplace expectations, and available HR resources.

  • Support labor-relations matters by gathering facts, reviewing relevant contract language, documenting concerns, tracking grievances, and coordinating timely responses with HR leadership and legal counsel as appropriate.

  • Assist with employee-relations reviews and workplace investigations by conducting interviews, organizing documentation, and maintaining appropriate confidentiality.

  • Coach supervisors on consistent policy application, attendance, documentation, corrective action, layoffs, recalls, and other workforce matters in coordination with HR leadership.

  • Coordinate employee changes and separations with payroll, benefits, IT, safety, and operations to ensure records and required notices are accurate and timely.

  • Monitor completion of required onboarding, safety, compliance, and jobsite training and follow up on missing or incomplete items.

  • Visit local jobsite and participate in employee meetings, orientations, and workforce planning discussions as business needs require.

  • Identify trends, recurring questions, and process gaps; recommend practical improvements that support employees and field operations.

  • Perform other HR duties and projects as assigned.

What You Will Bring

The Basic

  • Hands-on experience supporting union employees, labor relations, or the administration of collective bargaining agreement requirements.

  • Working knowledge of employee relations, workplace investigations, onboarding, employment documentation, and applicable federal and state employment laws.

  • Ability to interpret policies and contract language, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and escalate complex matters appropriately.

  • Strong organization and follow-through, with the ability to manage a high-volume, deadline-driven workload and maintain accurate records.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.

  • Clear, professional communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with field employees, supervisors, union representatives, and corporate partners.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working in HRIS, onboarding, applicant-tracking, or timekeeping systems.

  • Ability to work on-site in Boise, Idaho, and travel locally to project sites as needed.
