What is a union porter?

Union Porters are workers who are responsible for maintaining cleanliness, order, and general upkeep in residential or commercial buildings, such as apartment complexes or offices. They are typically members of a labor union, which advocates for their rights, benefits, and working conditions. Their duties may include cleaning common areas, removing trash, assisting with minor repairs, and helping residents or tenants with various needs. Being part of a union often means Union Porters receive standardized wages, job security, and access to benefits like health insurance. The role is essential in ensuring that buildings remain safe, comfortable, and well-maintained for all occupants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union porter?

To thrive as a Union Porter, you need basic building maintenance knowledge, physical stamina, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, safety protocols, and sometimes union-specific training or certifications is typically required. Reliability, strong communication, and a customer-service mindset are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure efficient building operations, safety compliance, and positive interactions with tenants and staff.

What are some typical challenges union porters face during their shifts, and how can they be managed effectively?

Union Porters often work in fast-paced environments where they must balance multiple tasks such as moving luggage, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting guests or tenants. Common challenges include handling heavy loads, meeting tight timelines, and dealing with diverse requests from building occupants or guests. Effective time management, strong communication with team members, and familiarity with safety protocols are key to managing these demands successfully. Porters usually work in shifts and collaborate closely with maintenance and janitorial staff, which helps distribute workload and ensure smooth operations.

Job description

Located on the original Hudson’s site, Pine Hall pays homage to Detroit’s past—and the storied Pine Room—through vintage keepsakes and ice-cold cocktails featuring Michigan spirits. As the first Detroit outpost of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, founded in New York City in 1985, Pine Hall brings four decades of hospitality to the city, drawing on the spirit of beloved restaurants like Gramercy Tavern and Shake Shack.

We're proud to serve up classic cocktails made with spirits from close to home, cold beer, and tavern fare that feels familiar, but perhaps a bit better than you remembered.

Who you are:

Porters are responsible for the overall cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and restaurant by washing pots and pans, keeping the kitchen and dining room areas clean, and ensuring adherence to proper sanitation standards. Porters are required to handle multiple daily responsibilities, display an ability and willingness to learn and take direction, and work in a team environment.

What you’ll do:

  • Consistently support a culture of Enlightened Hospitality
  • Display cooperation, sense of urgency, house pride, and an unwavering care for our guests and food safety through high integrity performance of ware washing and facility maintenance duties
  • Work with the kitchen team to keep all cookware and storage containers in good shape and returned to storage areas properly
  • Learn and retain standard operating procedures for all sanitation duties while consistently following a timeline and cleaning project schedule
  • Partner with kitchen team to promote teamwork and efficient excellence in station turnover and end of shift breakdown
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed and other duties as assigned to support team objectives and operational success

What we need from you:

  • Experience in a kitchen support position within a similar environment
  • Ability to walk or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work evening shifts
  • English fluency and additional languages preferred, but not required

What you’ll get from us:

At Union Square Hospitality Group, extending Enlightened Hospitality is at the heart of everything we do. We believe our people are our greatest ingredient. Joining our team means becoming part of a culture rooted in care, creativity, and growth. As a Porter, you’ll enjoy:

  • Competitive pay
  • Quick access to earnings: Eligibility for the USHG Digital Wallet, where you'll have next-day access to earnings and flexible saving options
  • Comprehensive health coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus flexible spending options for healthcare and dependent care
  • Time to recharge: Generous paid time off and paid parental leave to support life outside of work
  • Invest in your future: A matched 401(k) plan to help you grow long-term savings
  • Peace of mind: Life insurance, employee assistance programs, and exclusive access to primary care, mental health, and other wellness services
  • Support in times of need: Access to the USHG HUGS Employee Relief Fund, offering direct assistance to team members facing unexpected hardship
  • Dining Discount: A 51% dining discount across the entire USHG family of restaurants to share unforgettable meals with friends and loved ones
  • Convenience & flexibility: Pre-tax commuter benefits for transit and parking
  • Growth and community: Opportunities for learning, mentorship, and collaboration with some of the most passionate people in hospitality

Putting Enlightened Hospitality into Practice

Integral to our culture are our six behaviors. Our behaviors guide how we work together.

  • We play to win with humble swagger. Hospitality is a team sport where everyone deserves an opportunity to thrive and belong
  • Turn over the rocks and always be connecting dots to build uplifting experiences and relationships
  • Center the salt shaker with an unwavering commitment to excellence and the values that matter most
  • Write a great next chapter. The road to success is paved with mistakes well-handled
  • Bring a charitable assumption and err on the side of generosity
  • Leave our campsite better than we found it; always responsible for the impact of our wake

*The above represents the expected hourly range for this position. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your experience and other job-related factors

The responsibilities outlined above are not exhaustive. This role may be required to take on other duties or projects as necessary to support organizational goals, in alignment with their skills, experience, and the evolving needs of the business.
