Leading company in Facilities Management & Environmental Solutions has an immediate opening for a Labor Relations Specialist to join their growing team located in Farmington Hills, MI. The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for developing and managing programs and systems that foster positive and effective relationships between the company and its union employees. This position serves as a key company representative in union negotiations, grievance procedures, and labor-management council meetings. The Labor Relations Specialist ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and provides advice to executives, site managers, and employees regarding National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) regulations and employment practices. The role requires significant travel to various company locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grievance Management & Resolution:
- Receive, review, and document union grievances, ensuring all are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Maintain a central grievance database for multiple unions and ensure proper documentation and tracking.
- Investigate, resolve, and respond to employee grievances and complaints, analyzing evidence and applying relevant labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and precedent to determine appropriate solutions.
Negotiation & Contract Management:
- Support and participate in the company’s contract negotiation process by preparing communications and schedules.
- Collaborate with HR and in-house counsel to ensure the proper application of employment contracts and policies.
- Maintain, enforce, and update contract agreements and ensure compliance across multiple locations.
Labor-Management Relations:
- Facilitate regular labor-management council meetings and serve as a neutral party to mediate disputes and foster productive dialogue.
- Provide guidance and support to senior leadership, site managers, and union representatives on labor-related matters.
- Ensure that labor relations strategies align with the company’s objectives and values.
Training & Compliance:
- Facilitate training programs on labor relations topics, including employee conduct, attendance policies, and other relevant matters.
- Ensure company-wide understanding and compliance with labor laws, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
Regional Support & Travel:
- Maintain a physical presence at work locations in MI, MO, KS, TN, OH, KY, and Ontario, Canada (up to 50-75% travel required).
- Assist with the consistent application of attendance programs and other company policies across multiple regions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or a related field.
- A minimum of 4 years of exempt-level experience in labor relations, including handling grievances, contract negotiations, and dispute resolution.
- Experience with multi-state labor relations or Canadian labor relations is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, union representatives, and executives at all levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in using HRIS programs and systems.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to review complex documents, interpret data, and apply labor laws.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Conflict resolution skills and the ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and discretion.
- Strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining, and grievance procedures.
- Project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to travel frequently (50-75%) to various company locations as may be required.
