Hands-on accounting

• 10-15+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager with progressive accounting and finance experience
• Construction industry experience (strongly preferred) General contractor, specialty contractor - drilling and shoring contractor (commercial/ residential)
• Experience supporting companies in the $15 million to $20 million revenue range
• Technical Construction Knowledge (beneficial)
• Percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
• Work-in-progress (WIP) schedules
• Job costing
• Change orders
• Project profitability analysis
• Retainage accounting
• Progress billing (AIA billing)
• Certified payroll / Union payroll
• Equipment costing
• Overhead allocation
• Cash flow forecasting for projects
• Construction contract accounting
• Financial Leadership
• Produce accurate monthly financial statements within 10-15 days after month-end
• Develop annual budgets review
• Analyze gross profit by project
• Monitor project margins
• Identify cost overruns early
• Improve internal controls
• Develop KPIs for executives
• Present financial results to ownership
• Banking and External Relationships

• Sales and use tax
• Payroll tax
• Workers' compensation audits
• General liability audits
• 1099 reporting
• Annual financial audits or reviews
• Leadership Skills
• Manage and mentor accounting staff
• Communicate effectively with project managers and fi eld operations
• Hold department leaders accountable for budgets
• Support owners with financial decision-making
• Build scalable financial processes

• Qualifications include:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• CPA (preferred, but not always required)
• CMA or other finance certifications (beneficial)
• Improve cash flow and reduce working capital needs.
• Increase job profitability through better reporting and cost visibility.
• Build dashboards for owners and project managers.
• Lead budgeting and forecasting with operational leaders.
• Prepare the company for audits, bonding growth, acquisitions, or expansion.
• Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the owner or CEO.
• Banks and lenders
• Bonding companies/sureties
• External CPA firms
• Insurance brokers
• State and federal tax authorities
• Understand:
• Bonding requirements
• Working capital calculations
• Debt covenants
• Lines of credit
• Financial reporting required by lenders and sureties

• Ideally experienced with construction accounting software
• They should also have advanced skills in:
• Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, financial models)
• Business intelligence/reporting tools
• Payroll systems
• AP automation
• Compliance
