Operating Engineer - JLL
What this job involves:
The Operating Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of facility systems at JLL-managed properties. You will be responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex building equipment across all systems, with a strong focus on technical expertise in one specialized craft area while maintaining multi-skilled proficiency in others. This position is essential to delivering exceptional facility performance, minimizing downtime, and ensuring regulatory compliance while supporting JLL's commitment to operational excellence. You will work in a dynamic environment where your technical skills directly impact building performance, energy efficiency, and client satisfaction. This is a union position
What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Safely operate facility systems in accordance with all applicable government and regulatory requirements while demonstrating and enforcing safety rules and behaviors
  • Perform maintenance and monitor repairs to mechanical, plumbing, structural, control, and fire life safety systems to maintain building systems at applicable standards
  • Maintain HVAC systems and equipment at optimum performance levels through cleaning, inspecting, changing parts, recording readings, and making necessary adjustments
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner while reviewing monthly Client Service Request summaries to identify and correct recurrent operational problems
  • Monitor pricing and work quality of outside contractors to ensure cost-effectiveness and service standards
  • Assist the site Facility Management team with emergency situations including fire alarms, chemical spills, and hazardous conditions, taking appropriate action as needed
  • Identify, enforce, and assess safety hazards and risks while participating in incident investigations and complying with policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or state equivalent with minimum of two years of college or related trade schooling
  • Minimum of four years' experience working with high pressure steam systems
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record
  • City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License
  • EPA Universal Certification
  • Current member in good standing with Local 399
  • Physical capability to lift a minimum of 80 lbs, climb ladders up to 30 ft, work from heights, and navigate large campus-like settings with frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and stooping

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in one specialized craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations) with multi-skilled proficiency in others
  • Through knowledge of building systems optimization to achieve operating cost reductions, particularly energy efficiency, while satisfying customer requirements
  • Practical experience with thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical systems, as well as computer-controlled equipment
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience performing work using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety policies, procedures, and practices
