Orchid Insurance, an Arrowhead Intermediaries company, is seeking an Underwriter II to join our growing team in Tampa, Vero Beach, or remotely.

The Underwriter II is a highly skilled professional, proficient in all aspects of underwriting, including new business, renewals, and the integration of inspection findings to inform risk decisions. In this position, the Underwriter II is responsible for making informed decisions to approve, modify, or reject risks based on carrier underwriting guidelines. They evaluate documents related to personal lines insurance, such as past claims, inspection reports, losses, and the value and condition of properties. By assessing the degree of risk exposure, they make well-justified exceptions to guidelines, when necessary, all while safeguarding the company's profitability.

How You Will contribute:

  • Makes determinations to approve, modify, or reject a risk based on underwriting guidelines of the carrier.

  • Evaluates more complex risks within all product lines and can modify or reject risks with moderate authority. Handles underwriting referrals for new and renewal business, particularly when risks require deeper analysis.

  • Actively collaborates across departments (underwriting, operations, claims, marketing), contributes recommendations regarding products and performance, and acts as a resource and advocate for process improvements within their area of expertise.

  • Adheres to carrier guidelines, participates in training sessions and/or actively keeps oneself up to date on current guidelines, and acts as a resource and advocates for process improvements within their area of expertise.

  • Assists in training and onboarding new and less experienced underwriters as needed, provides guidance on processes, and offers informal mentoring.

  • Provide phone/chat coverage to meet client service levels and offer backup support for the team inbox.

  • Assists with internal and carrier-requested audits as needed by organizing and preparing audit files, including gathering required documents.

  • May participate and complete assigned User Acceptance Testing (UAT) tasks that support all aspects of the business in partnership with IT.

  • Actively engages with Distribution Team to create and maintain strong agency relationships by:

  • Actively engaged with users to negotiate and close unsold new business quotes.

  • Identifying cross-selling opportunities by explaining features, advantages and disadvantages of various policies to deliver and promote the sale of comprehensive insurance solutions to the agents/users.

  • Makes periodic office visits and/or participation in onsite carrier meetings, as needed, to further strengthen the Orchid brand and customer relationships.

Skills & Experience to Be Successful:

Required:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience: 2 plus years of experience in personal lines underwriting or a related field.

  • Proficient in all aspects of underwriting, including new business, renewals, and the integration of inspection findings to inform risk decisions.

  • License: Possess or acquire and maintain a FL 2-20 insurance license or the equivalent as required by FL state. Non-resident Florida teammates possess or acquire and maintain the non-Florida resident state equivalent Property & Casualty license.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong customer service orientation.

Preferred:

  • Possess or acquire and maintain a FL 1-20 insurance license or the equivalent as required by FL state. Non-resident Florida teammates possess or acquire and maintain the non-Florida resident state equivalent Excess & Surplus license.
