Position Summary

Ryan Specialty National Programs is seeking an experienced and growth-oriented Program Underwriter to join our expanding Business Services & Contractors team.
This role is responsible for underwriting, managing, and growing a profitable portfolio of specialized commercial insurance programs serving a diverse range of business service and contractor-focused industries, including staffing and workforce solutions organizations, janitorial and facility service providers, alarm and security contractors, fire protection companies, government service contractors, private investigation firms, and other niche commercial businesses.
The ideal candidate is more than a strong technical underwriter. They are proactive, relationship-oriented, commercially minded, and energized by the opportunity to build a business. They enjoy developing broker relationships, participating in market-facing activities, identifying growth opportunities, and taking on increasing responsibility as the portfolio continues to expand. What will your job entail?

Underwriting & Portfolio Management
  • Evaluate, price, and underwrite new and renewal business within delegated underwriting authority.
  • Analyze exposures, loss experience, financial information, operations, and risk characteristics.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, coverage structure, terms, conditions, and endorsements.
  • Maintain profitability, retention, and growth objectives across assigned programs.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify emerging trends, opportunities, and areas of concern.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions align with carrier guidelines, program objectives, and profitability targets.
Broker & Distribution Development
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers, retail agents, and carrier partners.
  • Serve as a trusted resource regarding appetite, coverage solutions, underwriting strategy, and market conditions.
  • Conduct agency visits, broker meetings, and customer presentations.
  • Identify opportunities to expand distribution relationships and increase program visibility.
  • Represent Ryan Specialty National Programs at conferences, industry events, and marketing initiatives.
Program Growth & Leadership
  • Partner with leadership on program development and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Assist in evaluating new classes of business and market opportunities.
  • Contribute to underwriting guideline development and process improvements.
  • Support mentoring and development of junior underwriting talent.
  • Play an active role in building the long-term success of the portfolio and platform.
QualificationsRequired
  • 5+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience.
  • Experience underwriting one or more of the following:
    • Commercial Package
    • Commercial Property
    • Commercial Auto
    • General Liability
    • Excess/Umbrella Liability
  • Strong analytical, financial, and risk assessment capabilities.
  • Proven ability to manage a profitable book of business.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for broker, agency, and customer meetings.
Preferred
  • MGA, MGU, delegated authority, program business, or E&S underwriting experience.
  • Experience working with wholesale distribution channels.
  • Prior business development or production underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of service industry and contractor-focused risks.
  • CPCU, AU, ARM, or similar professional designation.
  • Prior mentoring, coaching, or informal leadership experience.

The target salary range for this position is $140,000.00 - $175,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands.
