Undercoating information

What is an undercoating job?

Undercoating jobs involve applying a protective coating to the underside of vehicles to prevent rust, corrosion, and damage from road debris, moisture, and salt. Technicians clean the vehicle’s undercarriage, then spray or brush on specialized materials such as rubberized or petroleum-based coatings. This process helps extend the life of the vehicle, maintain its structural integrity, and improve resale value. Undercoating jobs are typically performed in auto body shops or specialized automotive service centers.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in undercoating, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in undercoating often encounter challenges such as working in confined or awkward spaces, exposure to fumes or chemicals, and ensuring even application for effective corrosion protection. Addressing these challenges involves following strict safety protocols, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and staying updated on the latest application techniques. Additionally, effective communication with team members helps coordinate tasks and maintain high-quality standards, ensuring that vehicles or structures are adequately protected.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an undercoating technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Undercoating Technician, you need hands-on experience with automotive maintenance, knowledge of rust prevention methods, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with spray equipment, protective coatings, and safety protocols is typically required, and some employers may seek certifications in automotive refinishing or related fields. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and good communication skills help ensure quality work and safe interactions with customers and colleagues. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective rust protection, maintaining vehicle integrity, and providing excellent customer service.

Job description

Do you take real satisfaction in handing off work you know is done right - not just done? Does finishing something to a standard that actually holds matter more to you than just getting it off your plate? Are you the kind of person who notices the detail everyone else walked past? Do you prefer a clear task, a defined standard, and the freedom to execute it exactly the way it should be done? Do you take pride in the fact that your work is what people see first when a vehicle rolls out the door?

If this sounds like you, then we need to talk...

Frazer, a leading builder of emergency medical vehicles, is currently seeking a Detailer to join our team. The Detailer is the last set of hands on every unit before it reaches the customer - installing liners, labels, grip tape, and undercoating, and cleaning units to a customer-presentable standard so that first impression is always a strong one. This role is critical to the quality and on-time delivery that Frazer's customers - and the patients they serve - depend on.

What Does a Week in the Life of the Detailer Look Like?

  • Cleans and preps unit interiors and exteriors to Frazer's customer-presentable standard - surfaces, corners, and details included.

  • Installs cabinet liners, rib rubber, and drip rails to spec, confirming fitment before moving to the next task.

  • Applies undercoating with the right PPE and technique, working cleanly and efficiently within the production schedule.

  • Places regulatory labels and grip tape in the correct locations per the job ticket, double-checking placement before signoff.

  • Walks the unit before it advances - catching any anomaly, damage, or missing component before it becomes a downstream problem.

  • Logs completed work and scans job tickets in the shop system, keeping the unit's documentation accurate and current.

  • Coordinates handoffs with adjacent work centers so units move through the production floor without delay or confusion.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read job tickets and basic specifications; willingness to learn shop systems (e.g., Syteline).

  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and undercoating with required PPE.

  • Prior detailing, finishing, or related manufacturing experience preferred; no experience required to apply.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience in specialty-vehicle, sign/graphics, or related manufacturing.

  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience will be considered.

Skills (to Pay the Bills)

Here's a list of a few competencies that the Detailer at Frazer should have...

  • You're detail-oriented in a way that actually matters - you notice what's off, you fix it, and you don't let it slide.

  • You're consistent - you do the job the same right way every time, not just when someone's watching.

  • You take ownership - when a unit has your name on it, you make sure it's right before it goes anywhere.

  • You're reliable - your team knows you'll be there, on time, ready to work, and that counts for a lot on a production floor.

  • You communicate clearly - when you spot a problem, you say something instead of hoping someone else handles it.

Why Frazer?

Frazer is a fast-growing company pushing the boundaries of what's possible in mobile healthcare. You'll join a team of driven, diverse people who take their work seriously and each other personally. We rely on our core values, invest in our people's growth, and give everyone room to unleash their potential.

What's in it for you:

  • A weekly paycheck - you get paid every Friday.

  • Company shutdown from Christmas through New Year's, plus 10 paid holidays and PTO that starts accruing from day one.

  • On-site micromarket, flexible schedules, and a real work-life balance.

  • Free financial wellness classes plus professional development and skills training.

  • 401k with company match, health, dental, and disability coverage.

  • A culture built on honesty, accountability, and continuous improvement - not politics.

Compensation

$18.00 - $21.00 / hour

Commensurate with education, certifications, and experience.
