What is an unarmed security guard?

Unarmed security guards are professionals responsible for maintaining safety and security at various properties or events without carrying firearms. They monitor premises, control access points, deter criminal activity, and respond to emergencies. Their duties often include patrolling, reporting incidents, and assisting visitors or employees, relying on observation skills and communication rather than weapons. Unarmed security guards often work in places like schools, hospitals, retail stores, and office buildings where a visible security presence is needed but the risk level does not require armed personnel.

What does an unarmed security guard do?

Unarmed security guards are responsible for monitoring a person or location, such as a retail store, a concert hall, or an office building. Their duties include crime prevention, monitoring surveillance videos, investigating suspicious activity, and reporting to a police officer if needed. The day-to-day work of a security guard depends on their role. A retail security guard’s goal is theft prevention and video monitoring, while a security guard at a concert hall may check bags for illegal devices. All unarmed security guards must be alert and professional. Patrons or customers will go to guards with concerns or questions, so excellent communication skills are also needed.

What are some common challenges unarmed security guards face during their shifts?

Unarmed security guards often encounter challenges such as managing difficult or confrontational individuals, remaining vigilant during long or repetitive shifts, and responding quickly to unexpected incidents without the use of weapons. Building effective communication skills and practicing de-escalation techniques are key to handling tense situations safely. Additionally, unarmed guards must frequently collaborate with law enforcement or emergency services and accurately document incidents, requiring strong attention to detail and professionalism.
