Job description

Reports to Practice Manager. Under general supervision of the BMG management and performing physicians, performs cardiac ultrasound, non-invasive diagnostic studies of the heart and/or other related studies.

Performs cardiac echo and doppler studies by:

  • Preparing the patient for testing, explaining purpose and procedure.
  • Preparing the ultrasound equipment for use.
  • Performing 2-D, M-Mode, and cardiac doppler, accurately measuring, and preparing study for cardiologist's review.
  • Recording accurately for logging and charging purposes.
  • Performing carotid doppler and LED doppler studies.

Maintains equipment and environment in the Echo Room by:

  • Cleaning ultrasound equipment and maintaining an orderly work place.
  • Reporting equipment malfunction to supervisor.
  • Restocking supplies and delivering reports.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Assisting with conducting in-services and staff education.
  • Completing other job related duties and projects as assigned or requested by supervisor.

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent, continuing education in the form of college level courses and/or specialized ultrasound training program, and successful completion of a basic EKG interpretation class (within the past 2 years). A minimum of six to twelve months of experience involving health care patient contact.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires knowledge of medical terminology, cardiac anatomy, and basic computer skills.
  • Requires basic EKG interpretation skills and CPR certification.
  • Requires six months training to become familiar with various specialized equipment and functions.
  • Demonstrates vision and color distinction necessary to perform echo and doppler testing, as well as hearing skills needed for patient evaluations.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity to manipulate ultrasound probe to provide optimal images.
  • Demonstrates good decision making and patient evaluation skills.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to continue education outside the office site and after proficiency is proven and/or registry requirements are met achieving registry status.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a patient care environment with occasional exposure to communicable diseases.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills in communicating and interacting with patients, families, physicians and staff.
