What is a UIC?
A UIC (Unit Identification Code) job typically refers to a position within a military or government organization associated with a specific unit or department. The UIC is a unique alphanumeric code used to track and manage organizational units. Jobs under a UIC can vary widely, including administrative, operational, and technical roles. If you're applying for a UIC job, it's important to understand the specific responsibilities related to that unit or agency.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the UIC position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a UIC (Unit in Charge), you need strong leadership abilities, organizational skills, and relevant industry experience, often accompanied by a degree or certification related to the field you oversee. Familiarity with scheduling systems, workflow management software, and reporting tools is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills set outstanding UICs apart from their peers. These capabilities are crucial for effectively coordinating team operations, ensuring productivity, and maintaining high standards within the unit.
What are the typical responsibilities of a UIC on a daily basis?
As a UIC, your daily responsibilities generally include overseeing the operations of your assigned unit, managing team schedules, and addressing any staffing or workflow issues that arise. You will also ensure that protocols and quality standards are maintained, provide guidance and support to team members, and serve as a liaison between unit staff and upper management. Depending on the organization, you may also monitor inventory, handle conflict resolution, and assist with training new employees. This role often requires a balance of administrative tasks and direct team engagement throughout the workday.

- Ensure high-quality technical content (e.g., subsurface modeling, well design, monitoring plans, risk assessments)
- Drive continuous improvement in permitting efficiency and quality
- Oversee regulatory compliance across the full project lifecycle, including monitoring, reporting, and verification
- Engage regulators proactively to support timely approvals and influence policy evolution
Drive Cross-Functional Integration
- Partner with subsurface, wells, environmental, and project development teams to align technical and regulatory requirements
- Support design of monitoring, surveillance, and seismic programs to optimize performance within regulatory frameworks
- Integrate permitting timelines into broader project execution plans
- Advise business and commercial teams on regulatory risk, timelines, and feasibility
Build External Relationships & Industry Presence

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, geoscience, environmental science, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in subsurface, wells, environmental, or regulatory roles
- Direct experience with UIC permitting, CCS projects, or closely related regulatory frameworks
- Strong knowledge of Class VI UIC regulations (EPA and/or state primacy programs)
- Experience developing or reviewing technical permit components (e.g., AoR modeling, well design, monitoring plans)
- Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines in a complex, matrixed organization
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct involvement in Class VI permit applications and approvals in the U.S.
- Experience in CCS project development and integrated workflows
- Familiarity with MRV frameworks and EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (Subpart RR)
- Understanding of adjacent low-carbon sectors (e.g., hydrogen, CDR, geothermal)
- Experience influencing regulatory policy or participating in industry advocacy
- Advanced degree in a relevant technical or business discipline
