What is a UAS program manager?

UAS Program Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, within an organization or agency. Their duties include managing teams, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, coordinating projects, and overseeing budgets and timelines. They also work closely with stakeholders to ensure that UAS programs align with organizational goals and safety standards. UAS Program Managers often possess expertise in aviation, engineering, project management, and regulatory compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UAS program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UAS Program Manager, you need expertise in unmanned aerial systems, project management experience, and a relevant degree in engineering, aviation, or a related field. Familiarity with UAS operations, FAA regulations, project management software, and often certifications such as PMP or Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams and manage complex projects effectively. These competencies are crucial for ensuring program success, regulatory compliance, and safe, efficient UAS operations.

What are some common challenges faced by a UAS program manager and how can they be addressed?

A UAS Program Manager often faces challenges such as rapidly evolving regulatory requirements, ensuring safety and compliance across operations, and coordinating the integration of new technologies with existing processes. Addressing these challenges requires staying current with FAA regulations, fostering clear communication between technical teams and stakeholders, and implementing structured project management methods. Building strong relationships with regulatory bodies and investing in ongoing training for team members also helps to maintain operational efficiency and program success.

Moodro technologies deliver advanced electronic warfare (EW), signals intelligence (SIGINT), and counter-drone capabilities that have been validated and deployed in real-world operational environments.

Moodro has earned recognition through participation in multiple Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) projects and selection for the JIATF-401 Pathfinder C-UAS Marketplace, reinforcing our position as an emerging leader in next-generation defense technology. Moodro team is composed of veterans, engineers, and defense professionals who continuously test, refine, and improve our solutions under real field conditions. They are committed to solving some of the industry's most complex technical challenges and seek individuals who share our sense of urgency, accountability, and mission focus.

Moodro is seeking a Senior Field Applications Engineer to lead the technical execution of customer demonstrations, field evaluations, operational exercises, partner integration tests, and internal R&D testing.

Position Summary

As the primary technical owner for every field event, this individual ensures all equipment, systems, and demonstration scenarios are thoroughly prepared, flawlessly executed, and continuously improved.

Approximately 80% of the role is dedicated to customer demonstrations, evaluations, integration events, and operational exercises, while 20% focuses on field testing new product developments and providing structured feedback to support continuous product improvement.

Working closely with the Project Manager, who oversees the business and program management aspects of each event, the Senior Field Applications Engineer owns all technical planning, execution, troubleshooting, and customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical planning and execution of customer demonstrations, field evaluations, operational exercises, and internal testing events.
  • Translate technical requirements into equipment plans, execution strategies, and operational objectives.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to identify, prepare, test, and deploy all required equipment, ensuring every system arrives on-site fully verified and mission-ready, including appropriate spare equipment.
  • Execute demonstration scenarios and serve as the primary technical interface with customers, test officers, industry partners, and other key stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot and perform field repairs to minimize downtime and ensure successful event execution.
  • Coordinate and support the technical personnel assigned to each event, ensuring alignment on technical objectives and execution.
  • Prepare daily reports documenting event outcomes, technical issues, lessons learned, and recommendations for product and process improvements.
  • Coordinate shipment and return of demonstration equipment between event locations and company facilities.
  • Manage, maintain, organize, and upgrade the company's demonstration equipment inventory between events.
  • Prepare equipment for upcoming demonstrations and support field testing of new product developments and prototypes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline required.
  • 5+ years of experience in field engineering, field applications engineering, systems integration, technical demonstrations, defense systems, robotics, autonomous systems, aerospace, telecommunications, or similarly complex technical environments.
  • Experience planning and executing customer demonstrations, field testing, operational evaluations, or system deployments.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and integrated system issues in the field.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate technical teams and manage multiple priorities in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
  • Strong written communication skills with experience preparing technical reports and documenting lessons learned.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (approximately 60–80%) and work in demanding field environments.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting U.S. Department of Defense or allied military customers.
  • Experience with unmanned systems, counter-UAS (C-UAS), electronic warfare (EW), signals intelligence (SIGINT), RF systems, tactical communications, or other advanced defense technologies.
  • Active U.S. security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one is a plus.
Success Profile:

The ideal candidate is a proactive, hands-on engineer who enjoys solving real-world technical challenges and takes ownership of successful outcomes. They are meticulous in their preparation, anticipate problems before they occur, communicate confidently with customers, and remain calm under pressure. They thrive in dynamic field environments and view every demonstration and evaluation as an opportunity to strengthen customer confidence while generating valuable feedback that drives continuous product and operational improvement.
