What is a UAS manager?

UAS Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance, and compliance of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, within an organization. They coordinate flight operations, ensure adherence to aviation regulations, manage teams of drone pilots, and maintain equipment. UAS Managers also develop safety protocols, handle data collection, and work with stakeholders to accomplish project goals using drone technology.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a UAS manager?

To thrive as a UAS Manager, you need expertise in aviation regulations, flight operations, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, typically supported by a relevant degree and FAA Part 107 certification. Familiarity with UAS flight planning software, GIS systems, and maintenance management tools is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage teams and ensure compliance with safety standards. These skills and qualifications are crucial for overseeing safe, efficient, and compliant UAS operations in a rapidly evolving field.

How does a UAS manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure safe and efficient drone operations?

A UAS Manager frequently works cross-functionally with teams such as operations, safety, compliance, and IT to coordinate drone missions and integrate unmanned aerial systems into broader organizational workflows. This includes collaborating on flight planning, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance, as well as ensuring proper data management and security protocols. Regular communication with stakeholders helps to align operational goals and address challenges like airspace coordination and evolving regulations, fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
