What is a U.S. Person Software Engineer?

A U.S. Person Software Engineer is a software engineer who meets the legal definition of a 'U.S. Person' as outlined by U.S. government regulations, such as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) or EAR (Export Administration Regulations). This typically means the individual is a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident (green card holder), or has been granted specific protected status. Many companies working with sensitive or export-controlled technologies require their software engineers to be U.S. Persons to comply with federal regulations. The job duties are similar to other software engineering roles, but with this additional eligibility requirement. This ensures compliance with laws governing the handling of sensitive data and technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a U.S. Person Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a U.S. Person Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), and typically a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Familiarity with development tools, version control systems (like Git), and sometimes security clearances or certifications (such as CompTIA Security+) are often required, especially for government or defense projects. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on complex projects and adapt to evolving requirements. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering secure, high-quality software solutions that meet both technical standards and regulatory requirements.

How does being designated a 'U.S. Person' impact the responsibilities or project assignments of a Software Engineer?

As a U.S. Person Software Engineer, you may be assigned to projects that involve sensitive or export-controlled technologies subject to U.S. regulations such as ITAR or EAR. This designation typically means you are eligible to work on government contracts or projects that require access to restricted information. You may also collaborate closely with compliance and security teams to ensure all project activities adhere to legal and regulatory requirements. Understanding these constraints is important, as they can influence your daily tasks, documentation standards, and communication protocols within the team.

Job description

We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. We are a team of mission-driven engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.
We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.
Flight Software links together the mechanical, avionics, algorithmic, and embedded worlds to actually make the airplane fly. As a Build Software Engineer, you will own the systems that enable quick and reliable building, testing, and deployment of the entire flight software suite prior to flight. A build software engineer sees lengthy build times as a core developer experience impediment and creates systems to make the whole organization more efficient.
ResponsibilitiesIn your role as Build Software Engineer, you will shape the build and continuous integration design for C++ and Rust software products both on-premise and in the cloud. You will also lead optimization of that infrastructure to ensure all software builds supporting flight are fast and repeatable across environments. You will work in a highly collaborative environment and coordinate with multiple stakeholders across engineering and IT functions.
Basic Success Criteria
  • 5+ years of experience large scale or mission critical environments implementing methodologies of continuous build, integration, and delivery (CI / CD)
  • 5+ years experience in C++
  • 2+ years of professional experience managing a modern C++ build system (Cmake, Bazel, ninja)
  • Experience with release automation and configuration management tools
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience

Preferred Success Criteria
  • Experience with performance optimization such as identifying and resolving bottlenecks in Linux and AWS, optimizing containers to enable efficient scaling, and lowering costs
  • Experience with Sonatype Nexus or similar artifact management systems
  • 1+ years experience in Rust
  • Experience working with AWS in a production environment

As a Build Software Engineer, you will be part of the Platform Software team. The Platform Software team is responsible for providing the low level embedded software and build infrastructure necessary to enable the development, test, and deployment of our autonomous aircraft software. This infrastructure consists of everything from multi-language build systems, hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testbed configuration, continuous integration pipelines, and cloud-based simulation container deployments. You will drive the optimization of our current infrastructure tooling as well as designing and developing the future of our team's development pipeline. You will help develop and maintain essential tools that enable developers at Reliable Robotics to deliver software products that are safe, successful, and meet certification requirements.
This position requires access to information that is subject to U.S. export controls. An offer of employment will be contingent upon the applicant's capacity to perform in compliance with U.S. export control laws.
All applicants are asked to provide documentation that legally establishes status as a U.S. person or non-U.S. person (and nationalities in the case of a non-U.S. person). Where the applicant is not a U.S. person, meaning not a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident, (iii) refugee under 8 U.S.C. ยง 1157, or (iv) asylee under 8 U.S.C. ยง 1158, or not otherwise permitted to access the export-controlled technology without U.S. government authorization, the Company reserves the right not to apply for an export license for such applicants whose access to export-controlled technology or software source code requires authorization and may decline to proceed with the application process and any offer of employment on that basis.
At Reliable Robotics, our goal is to be a diverse and inclusive workforce. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, creed, ancestry, sex, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or related medical conditions), gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, non-disqualifying physical or mental disability or medical conditions, national origin, military or veteran status, genetic information, marital status, or any other basis covered by applicable law. All employment and promotion is decided on the basis of qualifications, merit, and business need.
If you require reasonable accommodation in completing an application, interviewing, completing any pre-employment testing, or otherwise participating in the employee selection process, please direct your inquiries to work@reliable.co
