What is a TxDOT CDL and who needs one?

A TxDOT CDL refers to a Commercial Driver's License regulated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) required for individuals who operate large or specialized vehicles for commercial purposes within Texas. This includes drivers of tractor-trailers, buses, and other commercial vehicles that meet certain weight or passenger thresholds. Obtaining a TxDOT CDL involves passing written knowledge exams, a skills test, and meeting medical and residency requirements. It ensures that commercial drivers have the necessary skills and qualifications to operate heavy vehicles safely on Texas roads.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TxDOT CDL driver?

To thrive as a TxDOT CDL Driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of safety and transportation regulations. Familiarity with vehicle inspection procedures, GPS navigation systems, and Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance tools is typically required. Dependability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies help ensure the safe and efficient transport of materials and equipment, compliance with regulatory standards, and strong collaboration with team members.

What are some common challenges faced by TxDOT CDL drivers, and how can they be managed effectively?

TXDOT CDL drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating construction zones, adhering to strict safety protocols, and meeting delivery deadlines while operating large vehicles. Additionally, drivers may face varying weather conditions and need to stay updated on route changes or road closures. Effective communication with dispatchers, regular safety training, and proactive vehicle maintenance are key strategies to manage these challenges and ensure smooth operations within the team.

The right candidate is dependable, safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment. Drivers must be able to operate manual-transmission vehicles and will not be considered if their CDL includes an automatic-transmission restriction.

What You’ll Do

  • Safely operate Class A commercial vehicles on local routes
  • Transport asphalt, equipment, materials, and supplies to and from jobsites
  • Operate tanker, dump truck, flatbed, lowboy, or other construction vehicles as assigned
  • Assist the asphalt paving crew with daily jobsite operations
  • Help shovel, rake, spread, and move asphalt and construction materials
  • Assist around dozers, skid steers, loaders, and other heavy equipment
  • Load, secure, inspect, and unload materials and equipment
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Complete required logs, inspection reports, and DOT documentation
  • Maintain a clean and safe truck and report maintenance concerns promptly
  • Perform minor truck maintenance or troubleshooting when qualified
  • Follow all company safety procedures, DOT regulations, and TXDOT requirements
  • Communicate with supervisors, equipment operators, and crew members throughout the workday
  • Perform additional construction and labor duties as needed

Physical and Work Requirements

This is a physically demanding outdoor construction position. Candidates must be able to:

  • Lift, carry, push, and pull 50 pounds or more
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven surfaces for extended periods
  • Enter and exit trucks and equipment repeatedly throughout the day
  • Use shovels, rakes, hand tools, and other construction equipment
  • Work around active paving operations and heavy machinery
  • Work in extreme heat, cold, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions
  • Work early mornings, extended shifts, overtime, nights, or weekends when projects require
  • Remain alert and safety-conscious in an active construction environment

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Current tanker endorsement
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional commercial driving experience
  • Ability to operate a manual-transmission commercial vehicle
  • No automatic-transmission restriction on CDL
  • Clean and acceptable driving record
  • Strong knowledge of DOT safety regulations
  • Ability and willingness to perform physical construction labor in addition to driving
  • Dependable transportation and consistent attendance
  • Ability to pass all required background checks, drug screenings, and driving-record reviews

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hazmat endorsement
  • Asphalt paving, road construction, excavation, or heavy civil construction experience
  • Experience operating dump trucks, tanker trucks, flatbeds, or lowboys
  • Experience hauling oversized or construction-related loads
  • Familiarity with TXDOT regulations and procedures
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic truck-maintenance knowledge
  • Experience working around skid steers, dozers, loaders, or paving equipment

Why Join Forde Construction?

  • Local Houston-area work
  • Home every night
  • Full-time employment
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Opportunity to work with an established construction team
  • Hands-on role with varied responsibilities
  • No over-the-road routes

If you are an experienced CDL driver who is willing to get out of the truck, work alongside the crew, and contribute to the entire paving operation, we encourage you to apply.
