The Media Archivist Intern will assist WKRG-TV team members in processing and preserving the 70+ year legacy of News 5 coverage, providing greater access to a broad and deep wealth of recorded local stories for use by producers and enjoyment by the general public.

What Will I Do During my Media Archivist Internship With WKRG-TV / wkrg.com in Mobile, AL?

This position will contribute significantly to the organization of and preservation of our collections and establishing best practices to maximize the accessibility and usage of decades of historic audio-visual archive materials.

The work will include:

the organization and dubbing of -inch videotapes, Beta videotapes, 1-inch videotapes, 2-inch videotapes, 16mm film, and still images the detailed logging of those assets the creation of data templates in our archive management system regular meetings with journalists and other team members to provide progress reports on our archive preservation project, and identifying interesting, engaging archive material for possible inclusion in news stories, specials, documentaries, and other programs.

Qualifications for Summer 2026 Media Archivist Internships:

Preference is given to applicants with:

  • previous experience and training in the proper techniques for handling, inspecting, transferring, inventorying, cataloging, and preserving photographs, film, video tapes, and other audio/visual materials in permanent collections
  • understanding and capabilities in the proper tagging of material and the entry and management of metadata related to materials in the permanent collection

  • All Summer 2026 Media Archivist Internships are IN-PERSON and based at our main broadcast & digital studios in Mobile, Alabama.
  • All internships are SUPERVISED. The intern's station supervisor will oversee the intern's attendance and performance to evaluate, monitor, and assess the intern's progress and ensure they are receiving the proper education/training.
  • All internships are UNPAID.
  • Students who must earn academic credit to participate will receive priority consideration for positions in the cohort. Students are expected to obtain and complete any forms necessary to receive credit for the internship experience.
  • The intern's college/university academic advisor (and institution guidelines) determines the amount of credit available (and subsequently, the amount of time an intern will be available weekly). The station intern supervisor will consider each intern's availability to establish a work schedule that provides an enriching experience.
  • The intern is responsible for their transportation.

  • Applications, interviews, and acceptance are conducted on a rolling basis.
  • Qualified candidates will fill Summer 2026 Media Archivist Internship Cohort positions on a first-come, first-selected basis. When available internship slots are filled, the application process will be closed. This may happen before the deadlines and dates posted below.
  • The sooner you apply (by March 16, 2026, is recommended), the sooner you will be interviewed, and the sooner you will learn if you have been accepted into the program.

Here are some important dates and deadlines of which to be aware:

  • Selected interns may begin their internship experience on or after Monday, May 4, 2026.
  • Selected interns should complete their internship experience on or before Friday, September 4, 2026.
