Title: Academic Tutoring - Tutor I, Tutor II, Tutor III (Temporary Part-Time)

Position Summary: Tutor students to improve their academic performance, retention, and graduation rates.

Department: Academic Tutoring

Location: Tutors will work from one or more of the five Pellissippi State campuses or virtually.

Pay Rate:
Tutor I: Less than 1 year of experience, $16.00 per hour
Tutor II: 1-3 years of experience, $17 per hour
Tutor III: 3+ years of experience, $19 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities:

90% - Tutor students individually and in groups. Adapt tutoring methods to meet students' varying
needs and interests. Tutor through questioning, discussion, and demonstration.

4% - Complete tutor training activities and submit required paperwork.

2% - Communicate with Academic Tutoring personnel.

2% - Visit classes and attend events to promote tutoring services.

1% - Confer with other tutors and teachers to resolve students' problems.

1% - Refer students to other departments/resources within the College.

Required Qualifications:
A. The candidate must have successfully completed the class(es) that he/she will be tutoring and received a grade of B or better in the class.

B. Transcripts that show minimum qualifications must be provided.

C. Applicant must be professional, respectful, and trustworthy.

D. Applicant must have:

1. Communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey information to students.
2. Interpersonal skills: Ability to work with students of different ages, backgrounds, and learning styles.
3. Adaptability/Adjustability: Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances, including the use of technology and online tutoring platforms.
4. Organizational skills: Ability to manage time effectively and keep detailed records of student progress.
5. Patience and dedication: Ability to be patient and persistent in helping students reach their goals.

E. Writing/English tutors are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a writing-intensive major. A master's degree is preferred.
F. Math tutors must have successfully completed the next higher class that will be tutored. For example, in order to tutor Calculus II, a candidate must have completed Calculus III with a B or better.
G. Tutors must be able to utilize some computer applications, including use of the Internet.

Non-Essential Functions:
A. Greet students entering Academic Tutoring Centers and make sure they sign in.

B. Knowledge of Pellissippi coursework and requirements.

C. Enforce rules for behavior.

E. Multi-tasking abilities.

F. Perform related duties as assigned.
