Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
General Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must obtain a faculty recommendation for the subject area(s) to be tutored.

English and Communication Tutoring
  • Must have successfully completed Composition I and Composition II with a grade of A- or higher.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Mathematics Tutoring
  • Must have successfully completed College Algebra, Statistics, or the equivalent course(s) with a grade of B or higher.
  • Demonstrated strong mathematical knowledge and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly, accurately, and effectively.
  • Must successfully complete a mathematics skills assessment by the end of the first semester of employment.

All Other Subject Areas
  • Must have earned a grade of B or higher in each course to be tutored.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the subject area.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous tutoring, mentoring, peer leadership, or customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, learning management systems, or virtual tutoring platforms.
  • Faculty recommendation or departmental approval for tutoring in the assigned subject area.

Summary of Duties:
The Student Employee Tutor provides academic support to students by offering individual and small-group tutoring in assigned subject areas. Under the guidance of Student Success Center staff, the tutor helps students strengthen their understanding of course concepts, develop effective study strategies, and build the confidence and skills needed for academic success. Student Employee Tutors explain course material, answer questions, assist with test preparation, and encourage independent learning while maintaining a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
In addition to tutoring responsibilities, the Student Employee Tutor supports the daily operations of the Student Success Center by assisting students, faculty, and staff with tutoring-related questions, helping orient new tutors and tutees to program expectations, promoting tutoring services, and referring students to appropriate campus resources when additional academic or personal support is needed. This position provides valuable experience in communication, leadership, problem-solving, and peer mentoring while contributing to student retention and success.
