Job description

Student Employment Opportunity: PASS Program Lab Tutor

**This position is for current Palmer College of Chiropractic students only.

Palmer’s PASS Program is currently hiring student workers to serve as Lab Tutors for next term. We are looking to fill PASS Lab Tutor positions for the following classes and welcome applications from qualified students interested in supporting their peers. Please specify in your application which class you are applying for.

  • Spinal Anatomy (1 opening)
  • Gross Anatomy II (2 openings)

Function:

PASS tutors are motivated to help their peers be successful by learning how to learn and provide peer academic support to students in a variety of courses in turn, helping to shape students’ experience at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

The Palmer Academic Support Services (PASS) Lab Tutor is responsible for providing Palmer students supplemental group lab assistance in D.C. academic courses. PASS Lab Tutors review not only the content area of the lab portion of the course, but also present learning strategies, and test preparation techniques. Students selected as Lab Tutors must meet and maintain certain qualifications to be part of the PASS program and are considered employees of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend the mandatory New Tutor Orientation at the beginning of employment.
  • Tutors will attend meetings periodically as a team and individually with the Coordinator of the PASS program and/or director of Academic Support Services.
  • Tutors contract for a specific number of hours per trimester based upon their schedule and availability. Any notable change in the number of hours worked or the times the hours are scheduled are to be discussed with the PASS Program Coordinator prior to making adjustments.
  • As a Federal Work Study student, Lab Tutors must submit accurate timesheets that comply with policies and procedures of Financial Planning and Academic Support Services and will be paid for hours scheduled or approved by the PASS Program Coordinator. All work study students are expected to act and treat their position as an employee of the college. Falsifying information related to a work-study position will result in permanent termination from the program and charges of misconduct may be filed under the Code of Student Ethics.
  • Tutors are expected to arrive at their scheduled tutorial sessions prepared and on time. If a tutor must cancel a session, the PASS Program Coordinator should be contacted in advance so an announcement may be made to the class for which the tutorial supports, or a cancellation notice can be posted prior to the session.
  • The Lead Lab Tutor is expected to work collaboratively with faculty members whose course they are supporting. It is mandatory that tutors maintain consistent communication with faculty to ensure the tutorial sessions closely correspond to what the faculty member has presented and emphasized in class.
  • Lab Tutors are to provide open lab and /or Sunday tutorial sessions regardless of the number of students in attendance.
  • Tutors focus on clarifying, reviewing, enhancing, and reinforcing students’ learning. Tutors should NOT present new-uncovered material to the students.
  • The Lead Lab Tutor is expected to maintain and submit accurate attendance lists for all tutorial sessions. This list will be provided at the beginning of the term for the length of the term and is required to be updated weekly.
  • All information in the PASS program attendance sheet and information provided by students to PASS Lab Tutors are confidential under FERPA. The PASS tutor may not share personal information pertaining to a student with anyone other than the Student Support Services department. A breach in confidentiality will result in dismissal from the program and ethics charges will be filed.
  • Specific rules and regulations for the use of the Cadaver Anatomy Labs can be found in the PASS Program Handbook and should be reviewed prior to beginning work.
Qualifications
  • Tutors will be model academic students with a minimum of 3.0 G.P.A. and have good basic study habits. Final grades below 3.0, in any trimester, will be grounds for PASS Lab Tutor dismissal. Tutors must meet the college academic standards and a tutor on academic probation is not eligible to work.
  • A minimum ‘B’ grade must be achieved in the course that the student desires to tutor for.
  • Have successfully completed at minimum, the first two trimesters, going into the third with a 3.0 G.P.A; or be going into the second trimester with an "A" in the course that the student desires to tutor for.
  • Collaboration/Teamwork: Able to work productively within a team structure and identify and manage group dynamics.
  • Tutors will be able to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Tutors will serve as a role model for students.
  • Communication: Articulate thoughts and concepts clearly and effectively. o Break down content in a clear and meaningful way to students in their group o Actively listen to and answer questions during tutorial sessions.
  • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: Exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues, make decisions, and overcome problems.

o Help students learn how to learn the material. o Help students refine study skills and become independent learners.

  • Tutors will engage in ethical behavior according to policy and personal values.
  • Tutors will demonstrate personal accountability and effective work habits (e.g., punctuality, working productively with others, organizational, and time management skills).
  • Tutors will complete all attendance on time, along with other required tutoring database entries.
Length of Employment
Formative and summative evaluations will be conducted for all tutorial sessions toward the end of the trimester and/or as needed. Tutors will receive a letter of extension of employment or dismissal at the end of each trimester. When a letter of extension is received, tutors will need to submit an updated schedule, and hours requested, if they choose to continue tutoring.
