Chemistry Tutor

Job Description

Kaplan International Pathways Canada is hiring a casual Chemistry Tutor to join our team. The tutor will provide academic support to international students enrolled in the Year One Foundation Program at the University of Alberta. This role focuses on tutoring students in first-year university-level chemistry courses to help them strengthen their conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities in both lecture and laboratory components.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Academic and Operations Coordinator of the Year One Foundation Program, the Chemistry Tutor will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions for international university students in areas such as general chemistry, Atoms and molecules, states of matter, chemistry of the elements.

  • Assisting students in understanding Chemistry concepts, improving problem-solving skills and ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical lab settings, developing effective study habits, considering language proficiency and cultural differences in learning approaches.

  • Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide feedback on their academic development.

  • Clarifying course material and providing guidance on assignments, homework, quizzes, lab reports, and exam preparation using clear and accessible explanations.

  • Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.

Qualifications & Experience

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or a related field.

  • Strong proficiency at the university-level chemistry related courses, including both theoretical and practical components.

  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience, or laboratory instruction experience, particularly with international students, is preferred.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.

  • Patience, adaptability, and a commitment to helping international students succeed academically.

  • Awareness of language barriers and strategies for supporting students with varying levels of English proficiency.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Location & Availability

This position is based in person at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton. The successful candidate must be available to start in August 2026 and have afternoon availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please note that this is a term position until mid-December, with the possibility of extension.

About the Year One Foundation Program - University of Alberta

The Year One Foundation Program is a new joint educational partnership between Kaplan International Pathways Canada and the University of Alberta, launching in 2025. It provides international students who do not meet direct entry requirements with an opportunity to gain admission to the University after successfully completing a three-term (one academic year) program.

The program includes credit-bearing courses taught by university instructors and non-credit classes designed to supplement skill gaps and prepare students for success in their degree studies. Kaplan staff support students from recruitment through to program completion, ensuring a smooth transition into university life.
