Description Summary
Make a direct difference in students' lives. The Education Specialist, TRIO Tutor helps eligible Iowa Central students overcome academic, financial, and personal barriers so they can persist, graduate, and transfer with confidence. Working within the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services program, this position provides individualized guidance, coordinates tutoring, connects students with campus and community resources, and supports grant activities and documentation.
Schedule: This full-time position works 203 calendar days each year, creating an academic-year-focused schedule while providing consistent support during the periods students need it most. Some evening and weekend work may be required for student programs and events.

Examples of Duties
Student support and success
• Build trusting, student-centered relationships and provide individualized academic, transfer, financial aid, career, and educational-planning support in accordance with grant requirements.
• Maintain an assigned caseload of TRIO participants and meet with students regularly to review academic and personal progress, identify barriers, celebrate progress, and connect them with appropriate resources.
• Help students develop and update individualized Education Action Plans with clear goals and practical next steps.
• Plan and facilitate workshops, activities, and outreach that strengthen academic skills, financial literacy, career readiness, transfer preparation, belonging, and persistence.
Tutoring and program coordination
• Coordinate the peer tutoring program, including tutor recruitment, scheduling, training support, communication, and service follow-up.
• Provide tutoring or academic-skills assistance within the employee's areas of competence and connect students with additional learning support when needed.
• Assist with recruiting, screening, enrolling, and orienting eligible students into TRIO Student Support Services.
• Supervise or provide day-to-day direction to peer tutors and work-study employees as assigned.
Grant compliance and collaboration
• Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential participant records, service documentation, reports, and data required by the Director.
• Support program assessment and continuous improvement by tracking participation, outcomes, and progress toward grant objectives.
• Collaborate with Financial Aid, Admissions, Student Records, the Academic Resource Center, faculty, staff, and community partners to coordinate services and remove barriers for students.
• Represent Iowa Central and TRIO positively at campus and community events and assist with other program responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
• Master's degree in education, human services, psychology, counseling, student affairs/student services, or a related field; an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
• Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with students from varied backgrounds, including students who are first-generation, have limited income, or have a disability.
• Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate confidential records, meet deadlines, and use standard computer and student-information systems.
• Ability to work the position's 203-calendar-day annual schedule and occasional evenings or weekends as program needs require.
Preferred
• Two years of experience in a TRIO program, student support, advising, tutoring, counseling, education, human services, or a closely related setting.
• Experience coordinating tutoring, facilitating workshops, supervising student employees, or documenting services in a grant-funded program.
• Personal experience or demonstrated understanding of barriers commonly faced by TRIO-eligible students. Applicants whose backgrounds reflect the students served are encouraged to apply.
Supplemental Information
• This is a full-time, 203-calendar-day-per-year position. The work calendar is established annually based on student and program needs.
• This position is funded through a federal grant and is contingent upon continued grant funding. Compensation is established within the approved grant budget.
