What are turtles?

Turtles are reptiles known for their distinctive bony or cartilaginous shells, which protect their bodies. They belong to the order Testudines and can be found in a variety of environments, including oceans, freshwater, and land. Turtles are known for their slow movement, long lifespans, and unique method of retracting their heads and limbs into their shells for protection. They play important roles in ecosystems, such as maintaining healthy aquatic environments and dispersing seeds. Many turtle species are threatened or endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal trade.
