Position Overview:

The primary responsibility of the Grounds Maintenance Worker is to perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance, care and modification of facility grounds and landscapes which includes the operation of electrical and gasoline powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment in planting, cultivating and trimming facility grounds and landscaping. This position also performs maintenance on groundskeeping equipment and makes minor repairs as directed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operate and maintain on all types of mowing and edging equipment including gas powered walk behind and ride-on mowers, perform maintenance on equipment as scheduled or required
  • Mow, trim and edge around trees, plant beds, sidewalks, parking lots
  • Plant, trim mow, edge, irrigation, fertilization, pest control and detail work associated with all landscape elements; grass, trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials, etc.
  • Mix and apply chemicals used in groundskeeping utilizing proper mixing and application methods as well as wearing appropriate personal protective equipment for safety
  • Provide campus wide general maintenance and repairs by installing and removing landscape lighting, signs, gates, fences, and other landscape materials
  • Perform irrigation installation and maintenance and scheduling drip irrigation installation
  • Remove unsightly trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds. Uses rakes, brooms and other methods to sweep and collect trash and debris from streets, sidewalks and parking lots
  • Assist with the removal of snow and ice from walk ways and drive ways using snow shovels, snow blowers and tractors equipped with a blade. Apply sand, chat or salt on snow or ice-covered surfaces
  • Maintain maintenance logs recording watering and chemical applications including the date, time, area, duration and type of chemical applied. Include wind speed and direction.
  • Perform hour tracking and inventory management with designated system assigned by supervisor

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen [18] years of age
  • Prefer one year of experience in groundskeeping including knowledge of methods and materials used in planting, cultivating and trimming a variety of types of trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers and grasses
  • Prefer prior experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical or gasoline powered lawn and turf equipment
  • Prefer prior experience in the use and proper disposal of chemicals used in groundskeeping, horticulture and turf management
  • Must have valid KS driver’s license and meet Bluestem driving requirements

Physical Requirements:

Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
