The main difference between a Turf Installer and a Lawn Technician lies in their primary responsibilities. Turf Installers focus on installing new turf and preparing sites, while Lawn Technicians maintain and treat existing lawns. Both roles often work outdoors and may require similar certifications, but their job tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a turf installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Turf Installer, you need practical knowledge of landscaping, soil preparation, and turf laying, often supported by experience in grounds maintenance or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as sod cutters, compactors, and irrigation systems, as well as potential certifications in landscaping or turf management, is important. Physical stamina, attention to detail, and strong teamwork skills help individuals excel in this role. These abilities ensure the proper installation, appearance, and longevity of turf, leading to satisfied clients and high-quality outdoor spaces.

What does a typical workday look like for a turf installer, and what kind of teamwork is involved?

A typical day for a Turf Installer involves preparing the ground, measuring and cutting turf to fit the designated area, and installing it with precision. The role often requires collaborating closely with a team, including landscapers, equipment operators, and sometimes project managers, to ensure the installation meets client specifications and quality standards. Communication and coordination are essential, as installers work together to move heavy rolls of turf, operate machinery, and resolve any on-site challenges. The work is physically demanding and usually outdoors, but it offers a sense of accomplishment when a project is completed as a team.

What is a turf installer?

Turf installers are professionals who specialize in laying and installing artificial or natural grass surfaces for lawns, sports fields, playgrounds, and other outdoor spaces. Their work includes site preparation, measuring and cutting turf to fit specific areas, and ensuring proper drainage and stability. Turf installers may also maintain or repair turf surfaces over time to keep them in optimal condition. They often work with landscaping companies, sports facility managers, or directly with homeowners. The job requires knowledge of landscaping techniques, proper use of tools, and attention to detail to ensure a seamless and durable installation.

What does a turf installer do?

As a turf installer, your responsibilities are to install synthetic landscaping for various clients. You might work on sports fields, private residences, or for any other client who wants to replace their grass. Your duties include removing existing materials like soil or weeds, relocating or capping off sprinklers, and installing an artificial lawn. You use various materials and tools to replicate existing grass, but the turf itself is your main piece of equipment. After installation, you also nail down and groom the turf to create an aesthetic landscape. Turf installers typically work with landscaping companies.

Job description

Artificial Turf Installer – Crew Member (Cincinnati, OH)
Full-Time | $18–$26/hour based on experience

About the Role

Buckeye Greens is growing fast. We’re known across Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and South Dayton for installing high-quality artificial turf — especially custom golf greens and pet yards.

We’re looking for dependable, hardworking Installers to join our crew. This is a hands-on, outdoor role that involves base preparation, cutting and laying turf, edging, infill, and job site cleanup. You’ll work on high-end residential projects and be part of a tight-knit team that takes pride in doing things right the first time.

If you’ve worked in landscaping, hardscape, construction, flooring, or turf — great. If not, but you’re physically capable, detail-oriented, and willing to learn, we’ll train you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with job site setup, demolition, and prep work

  • Lay and seam artificial turf with precision and care

  • Install edging, cups, and infill as directed by the crew lead

  • Operate hand tools and power equipment (after training)

  • Keep a clean and professional job site from start to finish

  • Work closely with the crew and follow directions with urgency

Who We're Looking For

  • Experience in landscaping, construction, turf, or flooring (preferred but not required)

  • Physically able to lift 50+ lbs, kneel, bend, and work outdoors in all weather

  • Dependable, punctual, and willing to work hard

  • Comfortable with tools and basic jobsite safety practices

  • Willing to learn, take feedback, and grow with the team

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to get to job sites (bonus if you can drive a truck & trailer)

Who This Job Isn’t For

  • If you can’t show up on time and ready to work

  • If you’re not comfortable working outdoors in heat, cold, or rain

  • If you don’t take pride in doing things right the first time

Compensation & Schedule

  • $18–$26/hour based on experience

  • Monday–Friday, 40–50 hours/week during peak season

  • Overtime available

  • Opportunities for raises and promotions based on performance

Why Work with Buckeye Greens?

  • Build projects you can be proud of — no boring lawn mowing here

  • Be part of a team that values quality, craftsmanship, and hard work

  • Learn a specialized trade and grow with a company expanding into new markets

  • Direct, no-drama work environment with room to move up

How to Apply

Send us a short note with:

  • Your work experience (landscape/turf/construction/etc.)

  • Any photos of your past work (optional but encouraged)

  • Why you think you’d be a good fit

We’re hiring immediately.
