What is a turbine fitter?

Turbine Fitters are skilled technicians who specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of turbines, which are machines that convert energy from fluids like steam, gas, or water into mechanical power. These professionals work on turbines used in power plants, industrial facilities, and renewable energy projects such as wind farms. Their responsibilities include assembling turbine components, conducting inspections, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that turbines operate efficiently and safely. Turbine Fitters must have knowledge of mechanical systems, tools, and safety procedures to perform their tasks effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a turbine fitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Turbine Fitter, you need strong mechanical aptitude, technical knowledge of turbine systems, and typically a vocational qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with specialized tools, precision measuring instruments, and safety certification (such as OSHA) is usually required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for success in this role. These abilities ensure safe, accurate installation and maintenance of turbines, minimizing downtime and maximizing operational efficiency.

What are some common challenges turbine fitters face when working on-site, and how can they overcome them?

Turbine Fitters often work in challenging environments, such as power plants or wind farms, which can involve tight spaces, heights, or inclement weather. A common challenge is coordinating with other trades and adhering to strict safety protocols while maintaining efficiency. To overcome these challenges, Turbine Fitters should prioritize clear communication, thorough preparation, and ongoing safety training. Staying adaptable and collaborating closely with engineers and other technicians helps ensure smooth project execution and minimizes downtime.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Welder, you will restore and repair combustion components used in gas turbine applications through precision GTAW welding, fitting, and coldworking techniques. You will work with superalloy materials such as Inconel and Hastelloy, using engineering drawings and specifications to return service-run components to required tolerances. This role requires strong attention to detail, flexibility to address urgent production priorities, and the ability to safely operate material handling equipment in a manufacturing environment. Success in this position depends on delivering high-quality workmanship while maintaining safety, quality, and productivity standards.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Perform a wide variety of layout, fitting, and GTAW welding operations to restore combustion components to engineered specifications.
  • Cold work and form components to meet dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  • Use hand tools, grinders, burrs, and other equipment to recondition surfaces and prepare components for repair.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, sketches, and manufacturing specifications to determine required repair and welding processes.
  • Load, unload, and maneuver materials and parts using jib cranes, bridge cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
  • Support production goals by prioritizing urgent work assignments while maintaining safety, quality, and productivity standards.
What You Bring
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years of industrial welding, assembly, or related manufacturing experience, or completion of formal welding training.
  • Must be able to pass welding qualification testing, including Inconel GMAW 6G Butt Joint Open Root to ISO standards.
  • Experience fitting and coldworking materials to shape within engineering requirements, with the ability to use basic shop math and precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain forklift and crane certification; previous material handling equipment experience preferred.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
