Social-Media Editor, The New Yorker

The New Yorker is seeking a creative and highly collaborative Social-Media Editor to help shape how the magazine's journalism appears across social platforms. This editor will work closely with colleagues across editorial, art, photo, video, audience, and analytics to develop compelling, platform-native expressions of The New Yorker's stories as well as social-native brand extensions, mindful that these venues mark many visitors' principal encounter with the brand.

The Social-Media Editor is a strong writer, editor, and digital storyteller with excellent editorial judgment, a deep understanding of social platforms, and a sharp eye for how journalism can be translated into distinctive short-form, visual, and multimedia formats. The person in this role will help develop social-first treatments, recurring formats, video and visual storytelling approaches, and platform-specific executions that extend the reach and impact of The New Yorker's journalism while preserving the magazine's voice, standards, and sensibility. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between creative development and hands-on production. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop platform-native social treatments for New Yorker journalism across established and emerging platforms.

  • Write, edit, and produce social-native assets, including short-form video, platform-specific visual packages, copy, and other creative materials.

  • Work closely with art, photo, video, editorial, audience development, and analytics teams to develop and execute social treatments for major stories, packages, tentpoles, and editorial initiatives.

  • Work with the Director of Social Media to execute daily, weekly, and weekend publishing priorities through strong platform-specific framing, copy, visuals, and formats.

  • Develop and help lead new social-first formats, franchises, and other recurring or experimental treatments.

  • Provide editorial and creative guidance to other team members on post framing, platform expression, asset development, and sensitive or complex story treatments.

  • Help define, maintain, and evolve social best practices, including standards for voice, positioning, visual storytelling, video packaging, platform formats, and escalation.

  • Monitor platform trends, audience behavior, and performance patterns, and recommend creative or editorial adjustments based on those insights.

  • Contribute to social coverage of breaking news, major editorial moments, live events, and other time-sensitive programming as needed.

  • Help identify opportunities to leverage The New Yorker's archive for timely, creative, and platform-native social storytelling.

  • Contribute to the production and refinement of social assets for paid partnerships that run on The New Yorker's organic social channels, as assigned.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Five or more years' experience in social media, digital journalism, audience development, video, or editorial programming at a media organization.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a demonstrated ability to translate complex journalism into clear, accurate, engaging social copy.

  • Strong editorial judgment and a deep familiarity with The New Yorker's voice, standards, journalism, and areas of coverage.

  • Extensive knowledge of social-media platforms, both established and emerging, and an ability to adapt quickly as platforms, formats, and audience behaviors change.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop platform-native social treatments, formats, or packages for journalism, criticism, culture, humor, or news.

  • Strong visual storytelling instincts and experience working with images, graphics, video, or other multimedia formats for social platforms.

  • Experience producing or editing short-form social video, including Reels, TikToks, Stories, or similar formats.

  • Familiarity with design, scheduling, and video tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Dash Social, or similar platforms.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and collaborators in a fast-paced editorial environment.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with editors, writers, designers, photo editors, video producers, audience-development colleagues, analytics teams, and other stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with analytics and performance tools such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly,, or similar platforms, and an ability to apply performance insights to creative and editorial decisions.

  • Meticulous attention to detail, including accuracy, tone, grammar, image use, platform conventions, and editorial standards.

  • A proactive, experimental, and solutions-oriented approach to social storytelling.

  • Experience with motion graphics, illustration, audio, or more advanced video production is a plus.

  • Willingness to work occasional early mornings, nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.
