What is trucking?

A trucking job involves driving a commercial truck to transport goods from one location to another. Truck drivers may operate locally, regionally, or over long distances, depending on their specific role. They are responsible for ensuring timely deliveries, following safety regulations, and maintaining their vehicles. Some trucking jobs require special licenses, such as a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The industry plays a crucial role in supply chain logistics and keeps goods moving across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in trucking?

To thrive in trucking, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), strong driving skills, and a solid understanding of safety regulations and route navigation. Familiarity with GPS systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic vehicle maintenance tools is commonly required. Dependability, effective communication, and time management are standout soft skills in this field. These qualifications and abilities ensure safe, on-time deliveries and help maintain compliance with industry standards while fostering positive relationships with dispatchers and clients.

What types of schedules and routes can truck drivers expect in this role?

Truck drivers can work a variety of schedules, including local, regional, or long-haul (over-the-road) routes, depending on the employer and freight needs. Local drivers typically return home daily, while regional and long-haul drivers may be away from home for several days at a time. Schedules often include early mornings, late nights, weekends, or holidays, requiring flexibility and good personal time management. Understanding your route assignments and typical schedule in advance can help you plan accordingly for work-life balance.

Why do most people quit trucking?

Many truck drivers quit trucking due to long hours, time away from home, and demanding schedules that can lead to fatigue and burnout. Additionally, the job often involves physical and mental stress, low pay in some cases, and regulatory requirements like hours-of-service rules that impact work-life balance.
