Job description

Truck Driver -- CDL Class A
No Overnight Travel Required
Metals USA is seeking CDL Class A Truck Drivers in Greensboro NC. Metals USA is a solid, growth oriented, carbon-steel (plate, beam, tube) distribution center servicing the defense, commercial, construction, aerospace and fabrication industries.
Responsibilities:
  • Drives a 40 foot flatbed truck to transport and deliver materials
  • Maneuvers trucks into loading and unloading positions.
  • Operates company vehicle in a professional, safe and courteous manner and complies with all local, state and federal traffic regulations.
  • Secures loaded cargo into truck; safely load & unload materials using a winch, hoist and/or forklift.
  • Immobilizes or secures cargo on or within a vehicle by the use of tie-downs, chains, benders or straps.
  • Tarps and straps all loads before transport and untarps and unstraps all loads at delivery locations.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicle daily, complete driver's logs and reports in compliance with FMCSR daily.
  • Picks up and accurately delivers merchandise and corresponding paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Ensures customer messages/communications are relayed to appropriate management.
  • Delivers paperwork and communications between Metals USA locations, customers and vendors.
  • Notifies management of product discrepancies or malfunctions, and or personal injuries.
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required to perform the duties of a CDL Truck Driver.
  • Adheres to Reliance Steel and Aluminum's Code of Conduct as well as customer confidentiality requirements.
  • Adheres to all company and customer confidentiality requirements.
  • Keeps a clean and well maintained delivery vehicle, internal and external.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid CDL Class A driver's license -- in good standing with the State and Federal Regulatory Agencies
  • Valid OSHA Forklift Certification

Physical Demands:
Occupation requires physical activity more than 66% of the time (> 5.5 hours per day)
  • Ability to sit constantly
  • Stand, walk, sit, handling/fingering, reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel or bend, grasp and manipulate controls
  • Arm and hand steadiness
  • Visual acuity (near and far vision) for vehicle navigation
  • Lift, carry, push and/or pull 51 -- 100 lbs. with assistance
  • Must use 3 points of contact when entering and exiting the cab of truck
  • Must use 3 points of contact when going up and down the flatbed of truck

Other Physical Requirements:
Must wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • If required, must wear corrective lenses, in accordance with DOT physical
  • Steel-toed boots
  • Hard hats with the appropriate chin straps' chin straps must be worn at all times in the warehouse.
  • Protective eyewear
  • Hand protection -- gloves
  • Hearing protection if required by the hearing conservation program

Work Environment:
May be exposed to some of the following working conditions.
  • Drive an enclosed truck on a daily basis
  • Work outdoors while loading and unloading
  • Work indoors while driving in cab or filling out paperwork
  • Exposure to all environmental weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, precipitation and snow
  • Exposure to contaminants, such as diesel fuel or exhaust fumes
  • Exposure to road hazards while driving
  • Moderate to loud noise levels
  • Full body vibration when driving a truck
  • Oils, dust, fumes and metallic particles
  • Exposure to bright or dim lighting conditions: dawn or dusk, day or night

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • CDL Class A License -- current and in good standing
  • Must have heavy hauling experience; 3-5 years driving experience transporting heavy industrial loads
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical & random screen in accordance with FMCS regulations
