What is a tribe?

In a business or organizational context, 'Tribe' jobs refer to roles within a cross-functional team, often called a 'tribe,' that collaborates to achieve specific goals. The term 'tribe' is popularized by agile organizations, particularly in the tech industry, where teams are grouped into tribes to foster innovation, communication, and efficiency. Members of a tribe may have various roles, such as developers, designers, product managers, and marketers, all working towards a common mission or product. The structure allows for greater autonomy, faster decision-making, and a strong sense of community within the organization.

What are the common challenges faced when working as part of a tribe in an Agile organization?

Working within a Tribe in an Agile organization often involves collaborating across multiple squads and aligning on shared goals, which can present challenges in communication and prioritization. Team members must balance their squad's objectives with the broader Tribe mission, requiring strong coordination and adaptability. Navigating dependencies between squads and ensuring consistent stakeholder updates can be demanding but also offers valuable opportunities to develop leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tribe lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tribe Lead, you need strong leadership, project management experience, and a deep understanding of agile methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree and agile certifications. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and agile frameworks such as SAFe or Scrum is typically expected. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and the ability to motivate cross-functional teams are vital soft skills. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving collaboration, delivering value, and ensuring alignment across multiple squads within the tribe.

Company Description

The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe whose membership is composed of descendants of the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup people who inhabited Central Puget Sound for thousands of years before non-Indian settlement. The Tribe’s name is derived from the native name for the prairie on which the Muckleshoot Reservation was established. Following the Reservation’s establishment in 1857, the Tribe and its members came to be known as Muckleshoot, rather than by the historic tribal names of their Duwamish and Upper Puyallup ancestors. Today, the United States recognizes the Muckleshoot Tribe as a tribal successor to the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup bands from which the Tribe’s membership descends.
