Tree Trust information

What is Tree Trust?

A Tree Trust is typically a nonprofit organization focused on preserving, planting, and maintaining trees in urban and community environments. Their work often involves urban forestry, environmental education, and workforce development programs related to tree care and landscaping. Tree Trusts may collaborate with local governments, schools, and businesses to increase green spaces and promote sustainability. By improving tree coverage, they aim to enhance air quality, reduce urban heat, and provide natural beauty for communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an urban forester, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Urban Forester, you need a solid background in forestry, arboriculture, or environmental science, typically supported by a relevant degree and field experience. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, tree inventory systems, and certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist are commonly required. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help build community relationships and manage urban tree projects effectively. These skills are critical for maintaining healthy urban forests, ensuring public safety, and promoting sustainability in city environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working at Tree Trust and how can they be addressed?

Professionals at Tree Trust often balance fieldwork, community engagement, and administrative responsibilities. A common challenge is coordinating with diverse stakeholders, such as city officials, volunteers, and community members, to ensure successful tree-planting or conservation projects. Weather and environmental factors can also affect project timelines. Addressing these challenges involves strong communication skills, flexibility, and proactive planning. Team members frequently collaborate, sharing insights and resources to problem-solve and adapt to changing conditions.

What is the difference between Tree Trust vs Arborist?

Work EnvironmentInvolves community projects, environmental conservation, and educational programsFocuses on tree care, pruning, removal, and health assessments

ABOUT THE COMPANY
Since 1980, The Professional Tree Care Company has been trusted for tree services throughout Northern California. Based in Berkeley, CA, we service commercial, residential, and public works projects from Mendocino to Monterey, and from San Francisco to Sacramento.
The sister company you'll lead is a financially independently entity that has a fantastic reputation in the tree care industry. Many of the folks you'll work with have been in the business 20+ years and are expert at what they do. We have a long list of repeat customers, an organic marketing campaign that provides results, and our sales staff of Estimators are some of the most talented ISA-certified arborists around.
Reporting to PTC's Director of Field Operations, you will work alongside the sister company's Field Operations Manager while overseeing all staff members and being responsible for helping develop and meet annual goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Finance & Accounting
  • Perform all accounting functions including AP/AR, job costing, budgeting, and financial reporting
  • Manage cash flow, forecasting, and financial controls
  • Coordinate with external CPA for tax preparation and compliance
  • Ensure and report accurate tracking of labor, equipment, and project profitability
Payroll & HR
  • Manage full-cycle payroll for a mixed hourly and salaried workforce in Contra Costa County
  • Ensure compliance with California labor laws, wage/hour regulations, appropriate use of time-keeping apps on work cell phones, overtime authorization and pay, daily rest and lunch breaks, and serve as the company's point of contact for emergencies and injuries
  • Perform interviews and onboarding, manage employee records, benefits administration, E.D.D. reports, workers' compensation, run background and DMV checks. Send new field candidates to get physical exams, and work with the parent company's Human Resources & Payroll Manager as needed

  • Build structure and accountability across both office and field teams
  • Help shape the company's long-term operational and financial strategy
Leadership
  • Training the administrative staff to continue marketing and SEO efforts: post on social media, update and send out newsletters, contact clients for Google reviews, etc.
  • Educating our inside sales staff about Plant Health Care and other services we offer
  • Ensuring that the team is working collaboratively, sharing the workload, and making you aware of times when they need extra support or staff
  • Keeping the work culture fun yet highly efficient

QUALIFICATIONS:

The person in this position must communicate important concepts to a handful of staff members whose primary language is Spanish including: changes in company policies, teaching a new time-keeping application, reviewing OSHA & safety rules, etc.
  • 5+ years of experience in management, operations management, or another leadership position, ideally in a residential service-based business (tree care, landscaping, construction, plumbing, HVAC, etc.)
  • Strong accounting background with hands-on experience in payroll, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Human Resources experience. As the company's sole HR representative, you will be responsible for meeting with employees annually for their performance review, doing regional compensation analysis, providing raises when needed, writing employees up and putting them on PIPs (Performance Improvement Plans) when needed, processing EDD (Employment Development Dept.) forms, dealing with Worker's Comp. insurance and claims, evaluating medical/dental/optical renewal fees and then rolling out annual benefits, tracking vacation time, and checking in with your staff on a routine basis to make sure they're thriving at work.
  • Proven ability to implement systems that hold teams accountable and improve performance
  • Highly organized, decisive, and comfortable managing both people and processes

Bonus points
  • Experience working in the trades
  • Degree in accounting, finance, business, construction management, or something that helps you understand the inner workings of a growing operations organization
  • Knowing EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) or another methodology for strengthening company culture and determining when you have the "right people in the right seats on the bus" (ala Jim Collins)
