What is a tree removal service?

Tree removal services specialize in safely and efficiently removing trees that are dead, diseased, hazardous, or unwanted from residential or commercial properties. These professionals use specialized equipment and techniques to cut down trees, remove stumps, and clear debris while minimizing risk to people and property. Tree removal may also include site cleanup and, if requested, grinding or removing stumps. Hiring a professional service ensures that the job is done safely and in compliance with local regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in tree removal service, and why are they important?

To thrive in Tree Removal Service, you need a strong understanding of arboriculture, experience with tree felling techniques, and often a relevant certification such as ISA Certified Arborist. Proficiency with chainsaws, rigging equipment, wood chippers, and safety gear is typically required, along with knowledge of OSHA safety standards. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team are essential soft skills in this field. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, efficient, and professional tree removal while minimizing risks to people and property.

What are some of the safety challenges involved in working for a tree removal service, and how are they typically addressed?

Working in tree removal service often involves operating heavy machinery, handling sharp tools, and working at significant heights, all of which present safety risks. Teams address these challenges through rigorous safety training, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, harnesses, and eye protection, and by following strict procedures for equipment use and site assessment. Most reputable companies also conduct regular safety meetings and ensure compliance with industry standards like those set by OSHA. Collaboration and clear communication among crew members are crucial for maintaining a safe work environment.

Job description

We are looking for a professional, experienced Tree Climber / Crew Leader to join our

team. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who is highly skilled in climbing

and technical tree work and knows how to run a crew safely, efficiently, and professionally.

The right candidate takes pride in quality work, communicates well with customers and

crew members, and can confidently lead jobs from arrival through final cleanup.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional tree climbing, pruning, removals, and rigging
  • Safely complete technical and hazardous tree work
  • Lead and direct ground crew members throughout the workday
  • Plan job setup, climbing systems, rigging, lowering, and removal procedures
  • Operate chainsaws, climbing equipment, rigging gear, chippers, and other arboricultural equipment
  • Maintain high standards for safety, productivity, and property protection
  • Conduct jobsite safety briefings and ensure proper PPE and work practices are followed
  • Communicate professionally with customers and address jobsite questions
  • Inspect climbing and rigging equipment and identify maintenance or replacement needs
  • Train and mentor less-experienced crew members
  • Keep jobs organized and ensure thorough cleanup before leaving the site

Qualifications Required:

  • Previous crew leader or foreperson experience
  • Professional tree-climbing experience
  • Strong knowledge of modern climbing and rigging techniques
  • Experience with technical pruning and tree removals
  • Confident and competent chainsaw operation both aloft and on the ground
  • Ability to lead a crew and make safe decisions in the field
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety and hazard assessment
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying conditions
  • First Aid/CPR certification

Preferred:

  • ISA Certified Arborist or other arboricultural certifications
  • CDL
  • Experience with cranes, aerial lifts, skid steers, loaders, or similar equipment
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z133 and industry-standard tree-care practices

What We’re Looking For

We want someone who is a true professional in the tree-care industry—not simply

someone who can climb. You should be able to assess a tree and jobsite, develop a safe

and efficient work plan, communicate that plan to your crew & client, and execute difficult

work without sacrificing safety or quality.

We value skill, leadership, reliability, professionalism, and respect for the customer’s

property.

Schedule: Monday - Friday from 7 am - 3:30 pm plus overtime and emergency/weekend

schedule, as needed
