What is tree planting?

Tree planting is the process of transplanting tree seedlings, generally for forestry, land reclamation, or landscaping purposes. It involves preparing the land, selecting appropriate tree species, and planting them in a way that promotes healthy growth. Tree planting helps restore ecosystems, combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, and can provide economic and social benefits to communities. The work is often physically demanding and can be seasonal, depending on climate and planting goals.

What are tree planting jobs?

Tree planting jobs include a variety of positions related to planting, nurturing, and caring for trees. Most tree planting jobs do not focus exclusively on planting trees. Your duties may also include logging, trimming, or landscaping areas. Common roles include planting seedlings for horticulture, supporting reforestation efforts, or helping landscape a local park. Most tree planting jobs take place outdoors, but you can find a few jobs working with seeds and pots in factory-like settings to prepare them for shipment. Due to the long growing times, many tree planting jobs are seasonal positions. If you want to work with planting trees year-round, you may need to look for a management position.

What are some common challenges faced by tree planters, and how can they be managed on the job?

Tree planting can be physically demanding, with challenges such as working in remote areas, variable weather conditions, and repetitive tasks that can lead to fatigue. To manage these challenges, it's important to maintain proper hydration, use correct lifting and planting techniques to avoid injury, and wear appropriate gear for protection against weather and terrain. Many crews foster a supportive team environment, encouraging frequent breaks and open communication to ensure everyone stays healthy and motivated throughout the planting season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tree planter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tree Planter, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and basic knowledge of silviculture and reforestation practices, usually gained through on-the-job training. Familiarity with GPS devices, planting tools, and safety equipment is often required. Strong teamwork, self-motivation, and resilience in various weather conditions are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure efficient, high-quality planting that supports forest regeneration and meets environmental standards.

Help Build the Future of Tree Care at SuperTrees

SuperTrees is a growing, multi-state nursery and tree care company headquartered in Canby, Oregon, with expanding operations in Utah and Colorado.

We grow more than 400 varieties of trees and serve landscapers, municipalities, garden centers, contractors, and retail customers throughout the Northwest and Mountain West. In addition to our nursery operations, we provide professional arboricultural services including tree planting, pruning, tree health care, consulting, and risk management for residential, commercial, and municipal clients.

Our success is built on quality workmanship, knowledgeable people, exceptional customer service, and long-term relationships. As we continue to expand, we're looking for an experienced arborist who is ready to lead a growing operation and build a high-performing team.

About the Opportunity Branch Manager / ISA Certified Sales Arborist

This position is designed for an experienced ISA Certified Arborist who combines technical expertise with proven leadership and business management skills.

You'll lead the daily operations of our Utah tree care division while continuing to build strong client relationships and expand our presence throughout the region. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring crews, developing systems, improving operations, and growing a business - not just selling jobs.

You'll work directly with company leadership to help shape the future of our Utah branch while maintaining the high standards that define the SuperTrees brand.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and maintain relationships with residential, commercial, HOA, and municipal clients.
  • Perform site evaluations, prepare estimates, and recommend professional tree care solutions.
  • Manage the daily operations of the branch, including scheduling, workflow, and resource planning.
  • Lead, mentor, and support planting and pruning crews to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality work.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to company quality standards.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally while delivering an exceptional client experience.
  • Recruit, train, and develop employees as the branch continues to grow.
  • Collaborate with company leadership on strategic planning, budgeting, and operational improvements.
  • Help develop systems, processes, and best practices that support long-term growth.

What We're Looking For

  • Current ISA Certified Arborist certification (required).
  • Demonstrated success in tree care sales, consulting, or account management.
  • Previous experience managing crews, supervisors, or branch operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of tree biology, pruning standards, tree planting, diagnostics, and industry best practices.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, motivate employees, and develop talent.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for growing a successful operation.
  • Ability to balance customer service, operational efficiency, employee development, and business performance.

Why Join SuperTrees?

This is more than a management position - it's an opportunity to build something meaningful.

As our Utah Branch Manager, you'll have the autonomy to lead your team, improve operations, and help grow one of the region's premier tree care companies. You'll be supported by an established organization while having the freedom to make a lasting impact on the future of the branch.

If you're looking for a leadership role where your arboricultural knowledge, management experience, and business instincts will truly make a difference, we'd love to meet you.

  • Full-time leadership position
  • Competitive salary plus performance incentives
  • Three weeks of paid vacation (increases with tenure)
  • Six paid holidays
  • Up to 4% company retirement match
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health Spending Account (HSA)
  • Profit-sharing opportunities
