What is a tree landscape?

Tree landscapers are professionals who specialize in the design, planting, care, and maintenance of trees within residential, commercial, or public landscapes. Their responsibilities often include selecting appropriate tree species, planting, pruning, disease management, and sometimes removal of trees to enhance the beauty, health, and safety of outdoor spaces. They work closely with clients to create visually appealing and sustainable landscapes that complement the natural environment. Tree landscapers may also provide advice on tree health, soil conditions, and proper irrigation practices.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in tree landscape roles, and how can they be managed?

Tree landscape professionals often encounter challenges such as working in diverse weather conditions, managing heavy and specialized equipment, and ensuring safety while working at heights or near power lines. Effective communication with clients and team members is also key, as project requirements and expectations can change. Staying up-to-date with best practices in plant health care, pest management, and landscape design helps address these challenges and ensures high-quality results. Continuous training and teamwork are essential for managing risks and delivering successful projects.

Job description

Experienced Climber / Arborist – Tree Division

Hansen’s Tree, Lawn & Landscaping Services is looking for an experienced Climber / Arborist to join our Tree Division.

This position is for someone with real commercial tree-care experience working aloft using modern climbing systems—not someone whose experience is limited primarily to aerial lift operation. You will perform pruning, removals, rigging, and other technical tree work while working closely with Crew Leaders, Ground Technicians, Crane Operators, and other field personnel.

We are looking for a Climber who is safe, productive, dependable, and confident making good decisions in the tree. Experience leading or directing a crew of ground workers is strongly preferred.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform commercial tree pruning and removals using approved climbing systems
  • Ascend, position, and work safely throughout the tree canopy
  • Use chainsaws and hand tools aloft
  • Perform technical rigging and controlled lowering operations
  • Evaluate tree structure, defects, lean, weight distribution, and worksite hazards
  • Communicate clearly with ground crews, Crew Leaders, Crane Operators, and aerial lift operators
  • Direct ground personnel during climbing, rigging, and removal operations when assigned
  • Operate aerial lifts, chippers, stump grinders, and other tree-service equipment as qualified
  • Support crane-assisted removals, storm response, groundwork, cleanup, and other tree-care duties as needed
  • Protect customer property, utilities, landscaping, structures, and surrounding work areas

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 2–3 years of professional commercial tree-climbing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to climb and work aloft using rope-and-saddle systems
  • Experience with pruning, removals, rigging, and chainsaw operation aloft
  • Strong knowledge of climbing safety, equipment inspection, tie-in points, work positioning, and rescue procedures
  • Ability to identify common tree hazards and adjust work methods accordingly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with ground personnel
  • Valid Missouri Class E (Chauffeur's/For Hire) driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in changing weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading, directing, or training ground crews
  • Experience with crane-assisted and technical tree removals
  • Class A CDL
  • ISA Certified Arborist
  • TCIA training or industry-recognized climbing credentials
  • Aerial rescue, First Aid, and CPR certification
  • Experience operating aerial lifts and other commercial tree-care equipment

What Hansen’s Offers

  • Competitive weekly pay based on experience, skill, and qualifications
  • Full-time, year-round work
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Paid holidays and vacation
  • 401(k)
  • Modern equipment and a strong safety culture
  • Opportunities for advanced training and career growth
  • A clear path toward Senior Climber, Crew Leader, and other leadership opportunities

We are looking for more than someone who can simply get into a tree. We want a skilled Arborist who understands commercial production, works well with a crew, takes ownership of safety, and can help less-experienced employees become better at their jobs.
