Position Division: Forestry
Description
The City of Jersey City is seeking a qualified and experienced Forestry Aide for the Department of Public Works, Division of Forestry. Under direction, supervises and works with developers, contractors, other City agencies, utility entities and field staff; may perform inspections and supervise field work crews as needed; does other related duties as required.
Examples of Duties
Job Duties:
• Organizes and maintains tools for pruning and maintenance of young City trees.
• May be required to use ladder and safety harness, or other such step platform to perform pruning work.
• Uses manual pole shears, pole saws, hand saws, hatchets, chainsaws, and other cutting tools to prune young trees and remove girdling roots.
• Performs root collar excavations using hand trowels, shovels, soil knives, or other such manual digging implements.
• Uses wheelbarrow, pitchfork, or shovel to mulch trees after training.
• Uses watering hose, buckets, watering tanks or other irrigation means to water trees after training.
• May be asked to inventory trees and enter data into tree management software as needed.
• May be utilized on tree maintenance crew for ground operations as needed.
• Track work overtime and schedule work as needed for efficient production.
• Recognizes basic tree pest and disease issues and sanitizes tools to limit spread.
• Utilizes other basic cultural plant health care practices.
• Performs minor maintenance to equipment or tools used.
• Must operate motor vehicle as part of job.

Qualifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Required Experience: One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of young trees.
Required License: Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Appointees may be required to possess an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification or New Jersey Licensed Tree Expert.
