What is tree climbing?

Tree climbing as a job involves professionals scaling trees to perform tasks such as pruning, trimming, removing branches, or conducting tree health assessments. These workers, often called arborists or tree climbers, use specialized equipment and safety gear to climb and work at heights. The job requires physical fitness, knowledge of tree biology, and skill in using climbing techniques and tools. Safety training is essential due to the inherent risks involved with working high above the ground. Tree climbers play a crucial role in maintaining urban forests, parks, and private properties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tree climber?

To thrive as a Tree Climber, you need expertise in arboriculture, physical fitness, and knowledge of safe climbing practices, often supported by certifications like ISA Certified Tree Worker or similar credentials. Familiarity with climbing equipment, chainsaws, rigging systems, and aerial lift devices is vital for efficiency and safety. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Tree Climbers navigate hazards and work well with team members. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure both personal safety and the successful completion of tree care tasks in challenging environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professional tree climbers, and how can they be managed on the job?

Professional tree climbers often encounter challenges such as working at significant heights, dealing with unpredictable weather, and navigating complex tree structures. Safety is paramount, so climbers must be skilled in using ropes, harnesses, and other protective equipment, and regularly inspect their gear. Effective communication with ground crew members is essential for coordinating tasks and ensuring everyone’s safety. Continuous training and adherence to industry safety standards help manage risks and enable climbers to handle unexpected situations with confidence.

Job description

We are looking for a professional, experienced Tree Climber / Crew Leader to join our

team. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who is highly skilled in climbing

and technical tree work and knows how to run a crew safely, efficiently, and professionally.

The right candidate takes pride in quality work, communicates well with customers and

crew members, and can confidently lead jobs from arrival through final cleanup.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional tree climbing, pruning, removals, and rigging
  • Safely complete technical and hazardous tree work
  • Lead and direct ground crew members throughout the workday
  • Plan job setup, climbing systems, rigging, lowering, and removal procedures
  • Operate chainsaws, climbing equipment, rigging gear, chippers, and other arboricultural equipment
  • Maintain high standards for safety, productivity, and property protection
  • Conduct jobsite safety briefings and ensure proper PPE and work practices are followed
  • Communicate professionally with customers and address jobsite questions
  • Inspect climbing and rigging equipment and identify maintenance or replacement needs
  • Train and mentor less-experienced crew members
  • Keep jobs organized and ensure thorough cleanup before leaving the site

Qualifications Required:

  • Previous crew leader or foreperson experience
  • Professional tree-climbing experience
  • Strong knowledge of modern climbing and rigging techniques
  • Experience with technical pruning and tree removals
  • Confident and competent chainsaw operation both aloft and on the ground
  • Ability to lead a crew and make safe decisions in the field
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety and hazard assessment
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying conditions
  • First Aid/CPR certification

Preferred:

  • ISA Certified Arborist or other arboricultural certifications
  • CDL
  • Experience with cranes, aerial lifts, skid steers, loaders, or similar equipment
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z133 and industry-standard tree-care practices

What We’re Looking For

We want someone who is a true professional in the tree-care industry—not simply

someone who can climb. You should be able to assess a tree and jobsite, develop a safe

and efficient work plan, communicate that plan to your crew & client, and execute difficult

work without sacrificing safety or quality.

We value skill, leadership, reliability, professionalism, and respect for the customer’s

property.

Schedule: Monday - Friday from 7 am - 3:30 pm plus overtime and emergency/weekend

schedule, as needed
