Job description

This is an entry-level internship position that may result in a full-time role depending on the candidate’s performance and position availability.

Summary: The intern will assist with the oversight of all aspects of Wastewater Treatment Plant operations and administration of the treatment of wastewater under intense supervision. In addition, the intern will assist in analyzing and testing wastewater samples.

Supervision:  Incumbents report to the Plant Manager and Chief Operating Officer.

Major Duties:

  • Work with mentors to learn about the Authority’s water treatment process and opportunities of interest within the industry.
  • Assist with EPA quality control program for the laboratory and assist the performance of laboratory technicians.
  • Participate in assisting in the operation of wastewater treatment and maintenance including taking samples, testing and supervising the running of tests.
  • Assist with the performance of a variety of chemical and physical analyses on samples collected.
  • Assists in the operation of pumps, sludge processing equipment, valves and other equipment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes in the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Compliance Laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A candidate for this position must have graduated from High School or the equivalent. 
  • Educational background in wastewater and water treatment processing.
  • Educational background in biology & chemistry.
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office, Internet, and software.
  •  Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ideal candidates must be dedicated to the highest level of customer satisfaction, be highly organized, possess strong computer, communication, written and verbal skills, be able to multi-task, learn quickly, work with all team members, be willing to learn and grow, be detail oriented, when deemed necessary by management attend and pass the Wastewater Treatment Operator Class III certification.

Laboratory, Water/Wastewater Treatment, Biology and/or chemistry experience, understanding of communications (both written and verbal), have a positive attitude and great personal drive, a willingness and ability to learn in a fast-paced environment, and learn from constructive criticism.

Physical and Mental Requirements

 Work will be performed within an office/laboratory setting where incumbents will work with and be exposed to gas, chemicals, and solvents, as well as, work within the field. 

Fieldwork is performed outdoors. The incumbent may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The incumbent will frequently lift light objects and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
