Position Overview
The Survey Technician partners with the Professional Land Surveyor on a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure the successful execution of land survey projects. The role requires the preparation of comprehensive survey documents, including detailed maps, plats, and precise boundary descriptions, utilizing industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Carlson Survey, and Civil 3D, alongside Microsoft Office Suite. The technician will maintain meticulous records of survey data and field notes, ensuring project documentation is organized and accessible. Additionally, the role involves assisting with the preparation of daily field packages and managing field work schedules to optimize team efficiency. The Survey Technician II works closely with the manager when completing assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares a variety of survey documents per applicable state and local municipality standards (i.e. ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey, Existing Conditions, topographic, plats, etc.) and obtain basic information from these maps upon request
  • Independently writes legal descriptions for survey documents
  • Performs land records research and has knowledge of different governmental offices and the records they maintain
  • Compiles deeds and plats into a deed sketch
  • Assist with staking computations, and possess a general knowledge of construction staking principles and stake markings
  • Assist in preparation of field crew packages and point maps
  • Responsible for escalating potential hazards and unsafe working conditions
  • Maintains good client relations to foster and perpetuate a long-term relationship
  • Represents McAdams in the field with professional image through proper conduct and presentable appearance
  • Follow guidelines and company standards set forth by the Geomatics department
  • Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures

Skills + Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • BS or associate's degree with emphasis on Surveying, Geomatics or Computer Aided Drafting and/or have achieved certification as an NSPS CST Level II preferred
  • 2-5 years of work experience in surveying
  • General knowledge of geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and basic Land Surveying fundamentals and computations
  • Possess a strong technical knowledge of AutoCAD, Carlson survey and Civil 3D software, along with Microsoft Office
  • Able to generate a surface model from survey data sets and understand the principals of interpolating elevations
  • Ability to read and interpret DOT Right-of-Way plans, site plans, grading plans, utility plans and profiles, horizontal and vertical curves, foundation plans, and architectural plans
  • Able to take direction and execute with accuracy and thoroughness
  • Communicate and work well with others
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Successfully pass a motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers and peers

Work Environment + Physical Demands

  • Work will primarily be outside with varying environmental conditions.
  • Work will involve long-term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards encountered while maneuvering through project sites.
  • Work will also include working with fingers by picking, pinching, typing, and grasping often with repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to stand up or walk between 8-12 hours a day.
  • Weekend and overtime and/or overnight work and travel may be required.
  • Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
