What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a travel agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Travel Agent, you need strong customer service abilities, attention to detail, and a good understanding of travel industry practices, often supported by a certification such as CTA (Certified Travel Associate). Familiarity with Global Distribution Systems (GDS) like Amadeus or Sabre, as well as booking and reservation platforms, is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to client preferences set outstanding agents apart. These skills ensure clients receive personalized, efficient service and seamless travel experiences.

How does a travel agent typically collaborate with clients and travel vendors to create customized travel experiences?

Travel agents work closely with clients to understand their preferences, budget, and special requirements, then liaise with airlines, hotels, tour operators, and other service providers to arrange travel itineraries. This involves frequent communication, negotiation for the best rates or perks, and coordination to ensure all components of a trip align smoothly. Agents often troubleshoot issues such as flight changes or accommodation concerns, acting as an advocate for their client. Building strong relationships with both clients and vendors is essential for delivering memorable, tailored travel experiences.

How much do you earn as a travel agent?

Travel agents typically earn a median annual salary of around $40,000 to $50,000, though earnings can vary based on experience, location, and commission sales. Many travel agents also earn additional income through commissions on bookings and may work in agencies or independently with relevant certifications.

Is becoming a travel agent a good career?

A career as a travel agent involves helping clients plan trips, booking accommodations, and providing travel advice. Success in this field requires strong customer service skills, knowledge of travel systems, and often industry certifications; it can offer flexible hours and opportunities for specialization. However, the industry can be competitive and affected by changes in travel trends and technology.

Job description

Position Type: Full-Time, In-Office Industry: Travel Agency / Tour Operations Experience Required: 5+ Years Travel Industry

About Us

Timi's Tours has been proudly serving America's Heartland since 2006. We operate 80+ group tours annually across the U.S. and internationally, alongside a full-service motorcoach charter operation serving university, corporate, and leisure markets across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky. We hold IATA accreditation and are active members of ABA, UMA, and CVSA. We are expanding into a dedicated retail travel agency division and are looking for the right professional to lead it.

The Role

This is a professional, in-office position for an experienced travel advisor ready to step into a well-resourced operation with an existing client base, established supplier relationships, and real infrastructure behind them. You will manage and grow the retail travel agency division, serving our loyal client base with individual, family, and group travel bookings, while leveraging our accreditations, existing tour operation, and motorcoach & vehicle assets to create travel experiences others cannot match.

This is not a remote, home-based, or part-time position. We are looking for a dedicated professional who wants to build something significant within an established company, someone who shows up, builds relationships face-to-face, and takes ownership of a division with real growth potential.

What You'll Do

  • Manage and grow a retail travel portfolio across leisure, group, corporate, and cruise segments
  • Build on our existing client relationships with university, corporate, and repeat leisure travelers
  • Develop group cruise, river cruise, and escorted tour offerings aligned with our existing client demographics and new markets
  • Work directly with supplier BDMs to negotiate group contracts, amenities, and preferred pricing
  • Coordinate with our motorcoach operation to create seamless, fully packaged travel experiences
  • Prospect new corporate and leisure clients in our regional markets
  • Represent the company at industry events, client meetings, and trade shows

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years as a professional travel advisor or agency manager
  • Proven group travel experience, contracts, rooming lists, attrition, supplier negotiations
  • GDS proficiency
  • ARC Specialist qualifications, or familiarity with ARC and the ability to obtain specialist qualifications
  • Established book of business or demonstrated client development track record
  • Cruise product knowledge, ocean and/or river
  • Professional references from supplier BDMs or agency leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with university, alumni, or affinity group travel
  • Corporate or incentive travel background
  • CTA, CTC, or equivalent Travel Institute certification
  • ASTA membership
  • Familiarity with the Central Illinois or Midwest regional market
