Position Duties
The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill 1 vacancy for the Network Engineer position. If you are interested in employment in these classifications, you should apply to ensure you are considered for additional opportunities that may utilize the applicants from this recruitment.
The DOT Intelligent Transportation System Unit is responsible for the day-to-day support, operation, maintenance and management of the City's extensive Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure, comprising of a copper, fiber and wireless field communications network, video surveillance cameras, traffic signal controllers, advanced vehicle detection systems and sensors, network switches and routers, cybersecurity appliances, and advanced traffic control systems and cloud-based applications. Under the direction of the ITS Manager, the Network Engineer will collaborate with team members to 1) test and pilot emerging ITS technologies, 2) test, deploy and maintain network switches, modems and router, 3) maintain operating systems, databases and server hardware in support of the various ITS applications and traffic control systems, and 4) provide ITS related tech support for other teams within the department and across the City.
Key duties include but are not limited to:
  • Deploy and maintain Linux, Windows OS, and VMWare systems across a mixture of VM hosts and standalone servers
  • Test, deploy and maintain ruggedized network switches, routers, servers, diagnostic systems, and cellular modems as part of an extensive field Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) encompassing fiber rings, and DSL and private LTE equipment
  • Maintain strong relationships with consultants and equipment vendors to build technical expertise to support existing traffic control systems and applications and maintain effective support structure and response times
  • Provide limited on-call support, including weekends, when required, such as for major network migration, network outages, and traffic related events
  • Test and deploy new ITS technologies, such as AI driven IP cameras, Lidar systems, and Cloud based ITS applications
  • Assist team members in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the ITS field communications network to ensure high reliability, secured operations, and availability of network resources

Minimum Qualifications
Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, MIS, or a closely related field.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience equivalent to performing technical work of complex difficulty to provide desktop, data security, system administration, server, or network support to end users.
Acceptable Substitutions: Two (2) years of related experience may be substituted for up to two years of the education requirement.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possess an industry certification that demonstrates expertise in the relevant information technology field, such as a:
    1. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) certificate for Windows Server Enterprise
    2. Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
    3. Network Associate (CCNA) certification
    4. Brocade Professional IP Administrator (BPIPA) certification
    5. OR an equivalent professional, industry recognized certification acceptable to the City.
