A Transportation Planning Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of transportation planning. Interns typically assist with data collection and analysis, research transportation systems, support project planning, and help prepare reports or presentations. These internships provide valuable exposure to real-world projects, often within city or regional planning departments, engineering firms, or government agencies. The experience helps interns develop technical and analytical skills relevant to urban planning, mobility, and policy development.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a transportation planning internship?

As a Transportation Planning Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects, such as collecting and analyzing traffic data, assisting with transportation modeling, preparing maps and visualizations using GIS software, and supporting public outreach efforts. You'll likely collaborate closely with experienced planners, engineers, and stakeholders to help develop transportation improvement recommendations. Interns often participate in team meetings, contribute to reports, and gain exposure to both fieldwork and office-based tasks, providing a well-rounded introduction to the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transportation planning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transportation Planning Intern, you need a foundational understanding of urban planning, data analysis, and transportation systems, often supported by coursework in civil engineering, urban studies, or related fields. Familiarity with GIS software, transportation modeling tools, and Microsoft Office is typically required, and experience with data visualization platforms is a plus. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help interns effectively contribute to team projects and stakeholder engagements.
