Job description

Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transport Engineer Tech I Essential Duties:

  • Performs basic design work.
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex
    assignments.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Works on reproduction of plans.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transport Engineer Tech II (including Transport Engineer Tech I) Essential Duties:

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include
    distinctive design features.
  • Performs intermediate design work.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Works on reproduction of plans.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Transport Engineer Tech I Experience: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transport Engineer Tech II Experience: 2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate

 Transport Engineer Tech I Physical Requirements:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

Transport Engineer Tech II (including Transport Engineer Tech I) Physical Requirements:

  •  Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  •  Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  •  Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

Transport Engineer Tech I Competencies:

  • Higher mathematics

  • Basic roadway design

  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
  • Interactive graphic and design information systems
  • Writing and revising standards and procedures
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Performing basic design work
  • Performing basic drafting
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Follow verbal and written instructions

Transport Engineer Tech II (including Transport Engineer Tech I) Competencies:

  • Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles

  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities

  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. 
  • Required to work weekends and holidays. 
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Telework available twice a week after six months.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
