Wheelchair Transport Driver
TranSouth | San Bernardino, CA | Full-Time | $24.00/hr
Position Summary
The Wheelchair Transport Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and compassionate transportation of passengers with mobility needs using company-provided accessible vehicles. This position operates within TranSouth's Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) program and requires a professional, patient-centered approach to service delivery. The driver ensures all passengers are transported with dignity, that vehicles are maintained to TranSouth standards, and that all operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Compensation amp; Benefits
  • $24.00 per hour
  • $500 sign-on bonus, paid upon completion of 30 days of employment
  • $500 retention bonus, paid upon successful completion of 90 days of employment
  • Vacation: 40 hours front-loaded at time of hire
  • Sick Leave: 40 hours front-loaded at time of hire, per California state requirements

Essential Duties amp; Responsibilities
  • Safely transport passengers who use wheelchairs and other mobility devices to and from medical appointments, care facilities, and other authorized destinations.
  • Operate lift-equipped or ramp-equipped accessible vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws and TranSouth safety policies.
  • Assist passengers with boarding, securing wheelchairs and mobility aids using approved tie-down systems, and disembarking โ€” ensuring comfort and safety at all times.
  • Maintain accurate trip logs, manifests, and documentation as required by TranSouth, contract partners, and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; report mechanical issues promptly to the fleet maintenance team.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with passengers, caregivers, dispatchers, and facility staff.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure the vehicle is stocked with required equipment and supplies.
  • Complete all required training, certifications, and compliance activities as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid California driver's license with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR); no major violations within the past 3 years.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and understanding English; ability to communicate clearly with passengers, dispatchers, and facility staff.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and physical examination prior to hire.
  • Ability to operate accessible vehicles including wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement systems.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a customer-first attitude.
  • Previous experience in NEMT, patient transport, or a related transportation role preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to meet the following physical demands, which are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:
  • Lifting: Ability to lift 75 lbs from the floor
  • Push/Pull: Capability to push and pull 80 lbs horizontally and at an incline
  • Hand Strength amp; Dexterity: Ability to exert up to 50 lbs of force with a hand dynamometer
  • Climbing: Ability to climb steps and access vehicle entry points
  • Kneeling: Ability to kneel and reach the floor to operate securement systems
  • Sitting: Ability to sit for prolonged periods in excess of 2 hours while operating a vehicle
